At the same time, the Jets are sort of in a checkmate position. What do you do, not sign him? That's not an option.

Though, I suppose there's worse positions to be in. He's an elite player, just not a league-max player.

Laine's ELC expires this summer.

League max is 15.9 and I could see Laine walking away with close to it.

There's going to be a main boards thread: "[Confirmed Signing with Link]Laine re-signs with the Jets ($13.65M AAV for 8 years)"

I'll be in that thread saying he's not worth that, and I'm going to be absolutely executed. Everyone tune in. This **** should be on PPV.
I doubt he makes more money then Mcdavid, but yea thats a team thats gonna be in serious cap hell very soon.
While Blake Wheeler is an awesome player giving him 8.25 million to 2024-2025 is going to hurt a fair amount

Ideally, I wouldn't give any player more than $10M a year, and I don't care who it is.

McDavid makes 12.5, is as good as it gets, and he can't get his team into the playoffs. That's not a criticism of McDavid -- the fact of the matter is, it's a team game. No one player in the NHL today is that dominant.

Has anyone EVER been that dominant? Gretzky won exactly zero Cups after leaving Edmonton. Edmonton has one without him. No, it wasn't Prime Gretzky, but it was still 160 points a year. It wasn't good enough, even on some respectable LA teams.

I say ideally, of course, because again, certain guys just have to be paid ridiculous amounts. It's reached the point where you simply can't sell to the Jets fanbase that you decided to move on from Laine. You'll be fired.

Of all the Norris robberies over the years, it's extremely strange that people keep bringing up Lidstrom in 2011. To me, that was one of the most slam-dunk choices in recent memory.

It was a very weak year for defensemen. Lidstrom was second in D scoring and was still a rock defensively. It was an obvious choice. Who else was supposed to win that one?

And don't say Weber. That's revisionist history. 2010-11 was one of Weber's least impressive seasons as far as Weber goes.

They’re comparing Samuel f***ing Girard and Morgan Rielly to Lidstrom on the mains lmao.

Lidstrom was like Anton Stralman on acid, and oh yeah did I mention I’m gonna score 70 ****ing points AT THE SAME TIME

This is the way I put it in there and I think it's true: he's the best defensive 1,000 point defenseman in the history of the game. Absolutely bar none.

The only disclaimer on that would be that Bobby Orr only played 10 seasons, but Bobby Orr is Bobby Orr. Lidstrom has an argument for #2 all-time.

"Weber never won the Norris because [enter mental gymnastics here]"

Weber never won the Norris because he was never best defenseman. And it was always pretty clear.

From 2011-12 on, I take Drew Doughty every single season. And that's just one guy.

They also have Kyle Connor who is playing at a PPG pace so far and will likely end up a 65-70 point player. He's who I want the Rangers to target when exploring the trade market.

No way Jets are not trading Kyle Connor unless contract negotiations turn sour.

$10m represents 12.75% of the current cap and will be a smaller percentage next year. In 15-16, the Penguins won the Cup with one player at 13.3%, another at 12.1%. Last year, the Caps won the Cup with one player at 12.7%.

$10m seems like an arbitrary line to draw since it means something different from one year to the next, even “ideally”

Oh, and also... McDavid’s contract wouldn’t be a big problem for the Oilers if the team hadn’t been built so crummily around him. There’s not depth in the top-9. The Penguins didn’t win their 2nd Cup until they brought in Kessel, Hagelin and an effective 3C in Bonino, plus had a couple of strong performances from youngsters. There were 10 top-9 caliber players on that team. McDavid’s contract isn’t preventing the Oilers from doing something similar, but last years team had 6 top-9 forwards on it. Chiarelli keeps on making moves that change the dynamic, but don’t add anything. Hall for Larsson, Eberle for Strome, Strome for Spooner. It changes the makeup of the team, but doesn’t address the real problem.

@Machinehead is that even that outlandish of an opinion though RE: Laine?

I feel like if you brought that to the main board, you wouldn’t get much resistance

Jets fans would probably agree because giving Laine so much sends them into cap hell.

Messier was key to that team, and he helped us get a Cup too. The man is a legend.

Maybe not, but immediately it'll become "oh you read that on Excel nerd"

Yeah, his corsi and expected goals should be better for a $12M+ player. Sorry, folks.

Very fair point about the percentages.

I don't know about that.

Messier was literally the total package.
Depends on who you ask I guess. I just feel he gets flooded so much with leadership narratives (fair or not) that we forget he was nearly a 700 goal, 1,900 point player. Those are stupid numbers.
