It's going to be interesting next summer with Matthews, Marner and Kapinen (who is having a really good season) along with Marleau's 35+ contract.

They have $58.3MM committed to 12 players along $5.3 of it is Horton's money that goes on LTIR.

I'm assuming Mathews will want the same or more than Tavares and Marner more than Nylander, so at a minimum $18-20MM for the 2 of them. Evan taking away the Horton contract that is a minimum of $71MM right there for 13 players.

Great deal for the Leafs. I'm very interested to see if what they do with Gardiner at this deadline. Do they go the same route as STL with Shattenkirk? They'll move Reily down the line if need be, especially if Lilligren can replace him.

They also lose Marlaeu after next year. They can bridge Kappenen in the meantime or trade him for more assets.

They’ve got an elite goalie. They’ll be fine with dmen league is different now. You need the forwards and a goalie they’ve got a stud in Reilly already.

Sometimes, negotiations aren’t about two sides making concessions until they reach a middle ground so much as they are about two sides getting in the right mind frame to accept the inevitable. Deadlines have a way of forcing that to happen.

League max is 15.9 and I could see Laine walking away with close to it.
