Babcock fired lmao

This will be interesting. I'm betting they get a lift for a couple of games but all the problems are still there. Bunch of primadonna players. I admit it would be nice to have a few of them... just can't have a team full of them. Not what the spreadsheet says though.

I don’t think they should’ve fired Babcock. Dubas is the one who built the team and they’re not that great at all. The defence is shaky at best and their forwards are really weak.

They’re playing Ceci!!!

As Babcock, with 3 and a half years left of his contract, would you relax and wait to return to coaching or would you nullify your 6.25M per year contract earlier to sign with another team?

Agreed but i wouldn’t fire Dubas. He hasn’t been there that long yet.

I hope one day our team has unparalleled success like this.

That's what happens when you GM like this is NHL20.

You can't just blow the team up, draft high, throw that talent on the ice, and expect things to happen automatically.

Yeah the Leafs are in such a bad position having made the playoffs the last 3 years.

And how are they ever going to recover this year being one game below .500.

What a failure their rebuild has been.

It was going well until he decided to give your RFAs market value contract and higher contracts. You don't even do that in NHL20.

I'll go an record that Babs was (most) of the issue and the Leafs will turn it around.

Now, "turn it around" could very well mean making the playoffs as a 2/3 seed and losing in the first round, but I don't feel like the full implosion is coming. They'll play well with the new coach bump and some of their talented players will rebound (Barrie especially, who can't get any worse).

They got the donuts? Excellent....
Leafs will be completely fine cap-wise next year.

Might have to trade away one of their secondary scorers (Kapanen/Kerfoot/Johnsson) to make room to sign Muzzin, Dermott and Mikhayev, but that's all they'd have to do.

They have $16M in cap space and only 1 dman and 1 goalie under contract for next season. How are they going to pay 3 top 4 blueliners with that kind of money?

Based on their expectations? Yes, it absolutely has been a failure.

I'm pretty sure he can return at a lower salary and the Leafs cover the difference. The Leafs would have to okay it.

I could be wrong.

It's funny that in an alternate universe, Guy Boucher was going to be their head coach. He was the #1 choice behind Babcock. When both the Leafs and Babcock were negotiating, Boucher was apparently at Leafs headquarters ready to sign.

Their D will be young if the go with the kids on the Marlies now.. I don't buy they'll be fine.
They could be fine but I think more changes are needed in that roster. Its quick, really skilled, but too soft imo

One of Johnsson/Kapanen/Kerfott OUT
One of Sandin/Liljgren IN (maybe both)

Leaves ~$17/18 million to sign Dermott + other RFA's + a middle pair

It's tight but doable, a lot of their success will depend on the strides that Sandin, Liljgren and Dermott take.

There are higher standards because they get to build their team with unlimited resources.

They ruined their window with the Matthews contract. By the time the cap matures enough to catch up with it, he will be approaching UFA status.

The single biggest mistake they made was not locking Matthews up at 8 years x 12.XXM in the summer before they re-signed him. It was apparently on the table from Matthews camp. While it would not have been a great contract, it's much better than what the Leafs settled on - and I don't understand why they caved to the 5 year deal when they held strong against the 8 year one.
