If you need a few guys to take it up a notch then you're relying on luck and not on the talent/skill of the roster you built.

For example, 2017 Senators. A few guys took it up a notch, unexpectedly, and the team earned better than expected results. But it's not sustainable over the course of an entire playoff run.

It becomes quite possibly the worst contract in the league if he doesn't. I've learned never to bet against the player with elite skill and pedigree though. Claude Giroux was pretty terrible for a year or 2 after injury then got back to playing at a high level. Karlsson can probably do the same, if he wants to.
