Dallas wasn't going to give up their first for a UFA-to-be Spezza who had a not so great year after recovering from major back surgery

It scary thing is that the Sens play the Preds on Thursday. :scared:

It will be a close game like the 1st one.

The coach should be ripping into everyone on that team after losing 6-4 to Carolina. On my phone so too lazy to check but I doubt there are a lot of positive +/- players on Dallas.

Without feeling schadenfreude towards Spezza I do enjoy seeing Colorado and Dallas falling back down to earth after last season just like we did after the shortened season. Seems we were ahead of the curve on that one!

Well, progression isn't always linear. It's strange that year after year after year, so many people seem very surprised by this fact. Like it was an outrage that the Sens got 88 pts last year after having 96 pts the year before (pro-rated), that's 4 more wins over a 82 games season... and without facing Western teams...

So I think there's nothing too surprising so far since the rebuild

2011-12 : 92 pts
2012-13 : 96 pts
2013-14 : 88 pts

But the drama on the boards doesn't like this very much

Really, Paul? If that's true then BM is not a good GM. I would have held out for Chiasson, Paul and 1st.

But maybe the Stars would have simply passed. You're just making an assumption based on YOUR speculation and yet you're making judgments... :handclap:

IMO, I don't think there's any team interested in trading their 1st round pick for 2015. It would have to be for a young rising star cost controlled for years (like Tarasenko or Voracek).

You do realise that him being a minus isn't all on him though right?

It's not all on him but Seguin and Benn seem to be doing ok.

I know +/- isn't always a useful stat but Spezza isn't the player he used to be and that's hurting his all around game

Really, Paul? If that's true then BM is not a good GM. I would have held out for Chiasson, Paul and 1st.

The Chiasson, Paul, Guptill, 2nd package looked weak at the time because no one on this board (including myself) knew anything about Nick Paul. Sens management probably thought they got a top prospect in Paul, and judging from Nill's comments after the deal was done, it seems the Stars really liked him as well. Hell people here even voted Guptill far ahead of Paul on the Sens prospect rankings, while it now seems obvious that it's Guptill, not Paul, who is the longshot prospect in the deal.

I highly doubt the Stars would have given up Chiasson, top prospect, 1st in exchange for Spezza. That would be a much better package then Kesler returned. Just wasn't realistic given the market for centers at the time, and all the other factors, such as Spezza's NTC, his pending UFA status, his injury concerns, etc...

Yeah, you might be correct. I'm still miffed at the package that we got for Spezza. I wanted quality over quantity. Seems like BM caves in to offers. (examples: Heatley trade, Spezza trade, Ryan trade, etc.)

Sure you can say its not all on him, but obviously there's something wrong with the way he is playing that leads him perpetually into minusland.

If all the forwards on the team had the same +/- you could say its not on him but he's way behind the pack, as he was last year. He's just not that good 5 on 5

Not really. We still had him under contract for this year. If that was the best deal, I would have taken my chances with trading him at a later time.

Extremely risky proposition

A deal was there and they liked it so they pulled the trigger

Easy to say "I could have gotten more"

dallas was probably never going to trade their 2015 first rounder

most teams won't move that pick

Yip, I don't know all the internal details so technically this could have been the best proposal for all time and space. Still feels like BM caves in, when he makes trades.

He got us a real good deal (Nashville one) but Spezza chose Dallas over Nashville...

Not surprising that Nashville is a top team this year while Dallas has a worse record than Toronto...
