Around the NHL: PTO Season Becomes Waiver Season

There were some data guys doing work on baseball trades who found players who were having down years tended to be better in their new city while those having strong years tended to perform worse. I'll have to see if I can find that again.
Another piece of data analysis would be looking at whether it is better to make a trade weeks ahead of the deadline versus as late as possible.

The logical assumption would be the soon the trade happens, the better. You expect the transition time would be similar and the sooner you make a deal, the more time after the player gets used to his new team would be longer and therefore you get more of a positive impact.

But, it would be interesting to see if the data suggests that is the case or if the data says that it doesn't really matter.

That's the underlying math behind 'sophmore slumps' as well. If a player is having a strong year, it's difficult to continue having a strong year, and nearly impossible to improve.
That sounds like it's just regression to the mean.

It is

Baseball is a easier to isolate player performance at bat. Hockey the meaningful metrics would xG% as influenced by QoC and QoT changes IMO.

Reactions: Ehran and oldgoalie
Not to mention that the quality of refereeing in all major sports seems to be at an all-time low.
Is the actual reffing in the NHL that much worse than it has historically been?

There were some really terrible veteran refs in the 80s and 90s.

I feel like the reffing is just as bad as it mostly always has been, but now that there is replay that is actually getting it wrong what seems like way too often, we have entered a new, uncharted territory of lows

I guess if replay is considered part of reffing, then I would agree. But in terms of the on ice officials, I think they are pretty much about as inconsistently terrible as they always have been, so I am not sure there is a big change there.

It actually makes sense, because they play slow. I think a better choice for the Sabres is Connor Huard, who can has wheels

He may be faster than Livingstone but I'm not sure he's a burner.

When did Montour get good? My opponent in fantasy championship has him and is killing me.

Stepped into the minutes Ekblad left behind by being constantly injured and it's just kept going.

Random thought from the hockey history book thread: I wish someone would reach out to RJ to collaborate on an autobiography.

Also saw Ted Nolan is coming out with a book that should be a must read. Sadly the title isn't "What The f*** Do You People Want From Me? The Ted Nolan Story".
