Chicago taking on another year of a bum in a non competitive window to get some free picks.

*looks at the last decade

must be nice.

Montreal got a 1st to take Monohan in a year they knew they wouldn’t win

Chicago got a 2nd and a 4th to take Zaitsev next year when they know they won’t.

Buffalo has finished at or near the bottom most years of Pegula ownership and used this method to acquire Jack and shit. And Jack left town.

Complain about the Montreal trade if you want, but Monahan has a NTC so he could have said “no” to being traded to Buffalo. Although he was a target I had to be 4C.

Also, Zaitsev has a NTC.

But yes, let’s go with your assumption that the team has no interest in free picks

Buffalo's interests in cap dumps has always been because they also needed to get to the cap floor. They had opportunities to take on dead cap all last season, all offseason, and this summer, and once they've been above the cap floor they have yet to do anything of the sort. I think it stands to reason I wouldn't expect any weaponization of their cap space this year either.

Yep. It looks to me that keeping the roster cheap seems to be a thing right now. My guess - I think the Pegulas are sick of the Sabres bleeding money for poor results. We know Adams was brought in to slash the operating budget (when Botts refused to fire his whole staff), and he’s done just that.

I do think Adams has been given permission to spend eventually, and to spend to keep his own guys. But I don’t know that the Pegulas are looking to spend more than necessary right now. At least that’s how it seems to me…

I’m sure some of it is keeping cap space available for the new “core”. But there’s more to it than that, because like you said they could have weaponized their cap space with expiring contracts and such. It’s not like unused cap space rolls over in the NHL like it does in the NFL.

The problem is if you take on big contracts as dumps from other teams they have to play. They take roster spots and then that means making room on our roster for them. You can't just dump everyone in Rochester and some have NMC's so you can't send them down. So you take a big contract dump or two, and now the young guys you've committed to develop are sitting or back down in Rochester. It's not as easy as a team tanking and being happy to ice overpaid players who aren't going to stop them from losing.

How do you reconcile this complaining about not adding bums to the team with the usual posting about us not adding good players to the team.

Completely paradoxical, but I guess it works because it is complaining?

So that's a physical player out of the Panthers lineup. Now they just have to deal with Bennett, Gudas, Lomberg, Tkachuk bringing the pain.
