8 D

5 are UFAs after this season.

The other 3 are UFAs after next season.

It is going to be interesting to see how this works out for them.

Seeing Bedard practice in person, here’s what I think:

He’s small. My son is 12 and I got a great picture of them together. There isn’t much of a height difference. I’d say 5-9. If he measured in at 5-8 I wouldn’t be surprised.

His shot is elite by NHL standards right now. Almost no load up and his release is violent.

He’s not an elite skater. He’s really good but he’s not blowing by anyone regularly. His edge work is good.

The other dangerous part of his game is stickhandling in high traffic areas. He can maintain control among defenders.

Here’s my best comparison for him: a mini-Stamkos. I think he’s going to be a big goal scorer nearly immediately, then round out his game.

Re: McDavid. Two notes.

He’s human. First five reps, he he the PEPs 3 times, whiffed on 3 shots, and missed the net the other 2 times.

His secret is accelerating using crossovers around turns. He explodes on change of direction. No one in the camp could do it, even the bigger, stronger kids like Cole Sillinger. Their brains aren’t as tightly wired to do it.

How did Sillinger look? My longer term projection is Columbus slotting with NJD as the Metro rivals to Buffalo/Ottawa. Fantilli-Johnson-Sillinger is obviously a big part of that; and Sillinger has the biggest range of outcomes right now imo. The other two are more likely to have Cozens+ level impacts.

He was pretty good. Big, strong, skilled. He’s not as skilled as some of the smaller kids. And he wasn’t able to keep up with a lot of the tighter turning drills. He almost wiped out a few times, and fell over a PEP once.

That said, he’s probably more skilled than a lot of big guys. The drills are hard. And he went hard every rep.

Its crazy that with all the good teams Boston has had over the years they only managed to win the cup once. I mean, that's still good success, I'm just surprised they could only get over the hump once.

Three Finals appearances. A 4-3 win, and 4-3 loss, a 4-2 loss. In the free agent salary cap era, The Hump involves a lot of luck and injuries. The Habs, Isles, Oilers dynasties won't be repeated.

Still significantly better than all those great Sharks teams, with 1 losing Cup Final appearance to show for it.

Everything has to go right to lift the Cup.

RIP Rodion :(
As always, cancer sucks. RIP.

I haven't seen a junior age player shoot the puck with the authority he did at his tier in years - since Ovi when he was 16 - and that's going to be how he menaces more than just about anything else.
