Leafs still have their head up their asses around goal.
Eh, they're $8M over the cap as it sits today, which is at the 10% above cap they're allowed to be during the offseason.

They literally have to make a move in order to sign Samsonov to any contract. Talk about a prime target for an offer sheet. (Not that I'm advocating Buffalo do that, but someone in the NHL should make an offer soon to force Toronto's hands).

To reiterate, players who file for salary arbitration cannot sign offer sheets.

Tarnation
ADB in Chicago was the sort of forward the Wings are lacking. This could complicate an already complicated division. I like it.

Will fix everything
Mine was a comment on Ottawa paying steak prices to obtain him, then moving him for freezer burger prices

If the rumored signing of Tarasenko is accurate, him + Kubalik might be a net positive for them. They certainly bought high and had to sell low, but I'd rather my GM be out there and being aggressive than one who just hopes for the best.

The big net is for Detroit, he's a huge upgrade on Kubalik.

I haven't been a fan of a lot of Stevie Y's moves, especially on defense.

But....overall, they are 3 lines deep on offense, but lack the real top end talent. Raymond might get there. They are starting to look a little like the islanders with just alot of vets.

If they can get solid goaltending, they are probably right with us and Ottawa in a battle for the one of the wild card spots. It's probably a lot closer than most fans here want to admit.

Maybe a step back for us would be in the organizations best interest. Nothing else has motivated Adams to make the moves they need to.

With all 3 teams it's a matter of staying healthy as there's not a ton of separation between them

I definitely agree about health, but I think our roster stability can also give us a leg up on the competition.

When you turn over 8 of your 23 roster players in a single offseason, it can often take time to develop chemistry, find the right player combos, etc. We've seen teams struggle to find their rhythm up to Thanksgiving.

Hopefully the Sabres can use that to their advantage, get off to a solid start and stack some early season wins while other teams are trying to find their footing.

Remember when the Sabres added this many players each off season? Good times

The next 3 years Buffalo/Ottawa/Detroit will have the following players signed, and presumably form their teams' nuclei:

Buffalo Ottawa Detroit

Skinner9Stutzle8.35Larkin8.7
Thompson7.2Norris7.95DBC7.88
Cozens7.1Tkachuk8.2Copp5.6
Tuch4.75Batherson5Raymond8?
2829.630.3
Dahlin10?Chabot8Chairot4.75
Samuelsson4.3Zub4.6Holl3.4
Power7?Sanderson8?Walman3.4
Cliffton3.33Chychurn4.6*Seider9?
24.625.220.5
Grand Total52.654.850.8

Remarkable how close the teams' tabs are for their core 8 players. I think Detroit needs to upgrade their defense by quite a bit.

If we fill in those ? contracts for each team they'll have the following cap structure in 2024-2025
TeamContractsCap UsedCap Space
Buffalo115829
Ottawa146620.8
Detroit137116
