The Devils keep the puck. They did pretty well last year.. I expect them to be even better this year with a full year of Meier.. Hughes taking another step

Same. If Buffalo had a center who could defend on the level Hischier does, we'd be sitting pretty as Sabre fans. A year of heavier guys like Meier and Toffoli is only going to help.

Not sure where the best place to ask this is - but how much do you think centers playing defense is “want to” vs “know how to”

It seems to me our centers would kinda-sorta backcheck but never really get in front of their man. Mostly looking for opportunities to grab a loose puck then rush up the ice. To me, it seems like our centers could play defense better, they just…don’t.

Like I said…it’s all a scam. Splitting dead revenue while owners reap franchise value windfalls. Never let a billionaire convince you they lose money in sports.

While agree its not fair, billionaires arent buying teams because its profitable. They are buying them because its cool.

My point is that when any owner sets an internal cap or hampers their franchise with money demands…they’re pocketing millions and millions and millions because franchise values always rise. Never let someone tell you Terry has “lost” millions of dollars on the Sabres. He’s going to end up making hundreds of millions.

NHL teams, sure. Other leagues are more profitable.

And while the owners definitely do benefit from the increase in franchise values, they typically only realize those gains if they take on a co-owner and/or sell the team. Otherwise I would bet the Sabres have lost well upwards of $100m since the Pegulas have bought them. The franchise valuation has probably gone up $800m but unless he taps into that equity it’s sort of worthless to him.

I think it's a bad habit that is baked into Granato's push for offense. I don't mind them trying things offensively. I do very much mind players leaving their man early or not being on the right side of the puck because it takes two extra steps to do so. The poster child of that is Cozens - who has had games where he was focused on shutting guys down that were clearly a challenge he embraced - leaving Fasching to turn toward the puck and be way out of position to do anything about "that goal" in the Islander loss late in the season. That sort of thing drives me nuts. Same with his linemates blowing the zone early - they have the legs to stick with a play and still explode up the ice with speed and pace, but they instead cheat the zone. And that's lead to extended zone time against which is part of what they all need to understand - effort in their own zone will lead to opportunity in the attacking zone. Same with Thompson... that guy could be such a menace if he wants to be at both ends of the rink. But his line gets pancaked so often and a lot of it has to do with him going for a glide. If they don't want to be good at it, they likely won't be.

It was part of why I was hoping they would look at an internal move with Peca but Granato's band of amigos from his ECHL and early coaching days seems to be Teflon coated, even if the results aren't all great.

This…plus we don’t know the lost opportunity cost of them sinking that money into something else more profitable if the team is net neutral/negative from an annual revenue perspective. Don’t get me wrong, they don’t have my sympathy. We just need to recognize that there’s a lot more that goes into it than just bought it at x, now it’s worth x+y

It's also kind of neat that the Sabres stayed in Buffalo and we have the opportunity to complain about our "cheap" owners. I'll take that over transferring my fandom to another team.
