Carolina doesn't even hit much or otherwise play very physically. They just constantly stay in the opponents way in the neutral zone, sticks taking away passing lanes, an aggressive and tight forecheck. It's all kinds of hustle on the defensive side of the puck, all over the ice. Brind'Amour has instilled such discipline into his team that I hope and wish Granato just shows film to our roster for next season. I hate that it's Carolina, but much respect for a team that plays that way.

And yes, it can definitely be boring to watch, but it's so effective. It would be more boring if Carolina wasn't so good on the TOs and transition scoring. Buffalo has the FW talent to play that way and still score enough to win and be fun to watch.

Unless you are a Hurricanes fan, that hockey team is unwatchable. It is like watching Swiss or Finnish national team. The Devils did this to the league back in the 90s with a successful boring strategy and the league followed until the NHL said "enough". The tight-checking and pass disruption is ugly and uninteresting. If the NHL called the game by the book and cracked down on the subtle picks and interferece, it would help tremendously to counter Brind'Amours time and space game.

I hope Ruff figures this out.

I think it's beautiful but then again me and my gf cheer for Italy over Sweden in euros/world cup because we love that style of football.

Perfect defense and killing plays is just really enjoyable to me. Especially when you see the other players break down and become way too frustrated.

The NHL does, they can't sell this. They don't need to change anything about the tight checking part of the game, the shot blocking, the pass disruption. What they need to do is call the rule book as it is written. The aggregate of the flow disruption AND the interference/obstruction is what is killing the entertainment value. They only consider calling that stuff if the outcome negates a scoring chance or leads to a direct scoring chance. But with this new 5-man 'connected' game that all the high-offense teams (sabres/devils) are trying to play needs all 5 players moving up ice. Obsructing and laying picks away from the puck in the d zone or neutral zone, which is also an infraction, is getting ignored and the high-event stuff is not getting going. And the stuff they are allowing around the net is also a problem. Officials are afraid to give one team too many man advantages, but what they are doing is giving the teams that have incorporate these subtle but illegal plays the advantage. The only high-event hockey we are seeing with Carolina is when they frustrate the devils into a sabresque implosion.

It doesn't pass the eye test and is garbage. It is supposed to be entertainment. It is going to just get worse when other teams decide to build and coach their teams like carolina.

I definitely want to see the games officiated in a way that cuts down on interference, picks, etc, but if a team is good at disrupting stuff within the rules, it can be interesting to watch.

I was not comparing the systems, I was comparing the boring product that results in wins and how the league is copycat.

I am old school and I don't mind fighting at all but punching someone when they are defenseless should be 5 minute penalty and maybe even ejected from the game. I don't see how its not intend to injure. I get that context matters but it serves no purpose really.
