I am old school and I don't mind fighting at all but punching someone when they are defenseless should be 5 minute penalty and maybe even ejected from the game. I don't see how its not intend to injure. I get that context matters but it serves no purpose really.
I agree with this and my general view is that the NHL should do everything it can to get this stuff out of the game. Specific to this incident though, it really looks to me like Kane was pulling his punches.

I mean, punching someone in the head while both players are standing doesn't serve a purpose either.

Ya but I can get behind if two guys agree and want to punch each other until one is standing so be it. I mean if you want to take it further you might as well ban boxing or any fighting competition because whats the point of it.

In hockey fighting was to stop/prevent dirty play on your good players like Dave Semenko and Gretzky(In theory anyways)

In hockey, there is a code up until there isn't a code. I've been watching this game since the early '70's and it doesn't stop guys from doing dirty things to one another. The justification for why it isn't a worse punishment has more to do with people saying it is about preventing dirty plays, but dirty plays happened then too. People in a sport that allows physical contact and competition will always have some participants do things to their opponent to inflict damage or exact retribution. It's human nature.

As for boxing - that's the point of the sport. Hockey isn't boxing.

The doghouse
It was some weak body shots on someone who chose to fight. A little bit dirty but it’s a fight/scrum. I don’t even think it breaks the code because it wasn’t a squared up fight, this was a fight following some dirty shit. It’s a way less dangerous play than a lot you see, including what lead to it

I just can’t get upset by it.

Who he’s doing it to matters to me a lot in this. If he’s got a guy down there that doesn’t mix it up and he’s taking full advantage…don’t like it at all. If he’s even got a guy who will stand up and fight face to face honorably despite being outmatched like a Krebs deal…don’t like it at all. If it’s a punk who does his own shit…love it. Hit him again.
