Remember when MacKinnon was a glorified 50 point player on here? Good times

I must have missed those times. He had a real solid rookie season....sophmore slumpish 2nd year. Picked up a bit his 3rd year and since than has taken off.

Wouldn't shock me a bit if that's the way things will be with Lafrenier. Hopefully not as bad a 2nd year MacK had but he may have a hiccup or two along the way...it happens even to the greats except of course McDavid, Crosby,Kane...etc.

I dunno maybe Lafrenier won't struggle at all which would be great...we'll see soon enough.

Yikes I'm sorry about that. I can understand your hatred plus being a Ranger fan doesn't help.

I never liked Stan Fischler for the same reason. I don't want to say I hate him because the guy is nearly 90 and I finally got a career break in my late-30s after years of being at mostly trash jobs, but in the early 2000s when I was young and right out of college and looking to shape my career, I spoke to him on the phone about interning and he just seemed to be in such a bad mood and grump that day. I was trying to compliment him on one of his articles he published a week before and ask about hockey and he gave me the "I just got out of bed and haven't had my black coffee" vibe. We never spoke again.

I already had an issue with him because of all the cheap shots he'd take at the Rangers throughout the 80s and even the early 90s when he was on the Sportschannel payroll and lets just say I have acquaintances and I've worked with people throughout my life who have worked with him and it's very hard for me to stay cordial and not just say "%#% that guy."
This reminds me that I used to despise Fischler. Over the last 30 years, since he moved over to MSG, I’ve found him enjoyable. But yeah, he used to be pretty nasty, needling the Rangers, from memory.

Who are we rooting for: Stars or Avalanche? Stars winning would mean a higher first round pick, but we own the Stars third rounder, so we want that to be as high as possible.

Are the 23rd and a higher third round pick worth more than the 22nd and a lower third rounder?
Stars. I dislike the Avalanche. I know it’s hater-ish but that franchise was born on third base. f*** that.

Thinking about Fischler now (not that I really wanted to) but he always wrote and spoke with an eye on who was paying him. So when the Islanders or Devils were his paymasters he always made sure to praise those teams effusively and slamming the Rangers was just part of the job--equivalent to throwing raw meat to Islanders or Devils fans to gorge themselves on. Even when the Rangers won in 1994 he couldn't get over blown officiating calls in the New Jersey series and even though the Rangers invited him to the celebration he was a bit on the resentful side but he did show up. Sad behavior for someone who grew up a Rangers fan. That said he's working with the Islanders during the 4 cup run and for the Devils when they were making cup runs too so he had plenty of basking in the glow glory time.

I remember him writing weekly columns in the Hockey News but also as a regular with the Sporting News when the Sporting News cared a bit more about hockey. He was all over a lot of hockey mags---pretty much had a finger in a lot of pies and usually if the Rangers came up there was some negative connotation. It's like something happened between him and the Rangers that he's never been able to forgive them for. He wrote or co-wrote or ghost-wrote numerous hockey bios and trivia books and a book or two on the NYC subway--so a busy life.

Comcast owns the Flyers

lol, ok. I didn’t realize the parent company made the Flyers decisions.

side notes; Sports are a unique bird. Back then, the marketing machine was pretty primitive. Heck, the marketing machine isn’t even recognizable compared to a 15 years ago. The NHL is still lagging or maybe it only appears that way due to the NFL. Amazing. The market potential for the NFL isn’t even close to where it’s going while the product on the field gets worse.

So with that news you can be sure the Caps will hire gallant or Laviolette

the only team in the Metro that we’ll have a better coach than is NJ with Ruff

that’s not necessarily meant as a knock on Quinn it’s just a fact. Every other team has an elite coach we don’t.

Trotz Torts Sully AV Rod and one of those I mentioned above are all vastly more experienced more structured and just better coaches than Quinn. Seeing it in these playoffs structure matters.

Todd Reirden is out in Washington, per Elliotte.

I mean...Todd Reirdan would be a natural hire here as an assistant, no? He helped coach the Capitals defense to a Stanley Cup only a couple of years ago. We happen to need a new "defensive coordinator."

Seems like a natural fit. Am I missing something or should this be a slam dunk?

The Caps are an aging team--they have three regulars--Vrana, Siegenthaler and Samsonov under the age of 25 and not all that many great prospects--McMichael, Leason, Alexeyev, Fehevary and maybe a couple others. They'll go as long and as far as Ovechkin, Backstrom, Carlson and Kuznetsov can take them. This year might have been their last hurrah with the group they have. A coach can help a team for sure but the personnel they have to work with matters more. Quenneville's spinning his wheels in Florida right now.

If we can fill a need organizationally I prefer going that route. To me Gord Murphy is here and there might not be an AHL season. I'd stick with him. By the way we also have Greg Brown--former NHL defenseman. Another thing is Reirden has been a head coach now--if the Rangers move on from Quinn in the next year or two I really don't want Reirden becoming our head coach.

Coaching matters and we’ll have the most inexperienced one in our division. I don’t know what to tell you that’s just a fact

You want Murphy even after we were completely overmatched against Carolina? It was a small sample size for sure, but still.

Brown is rumored to be the next HC of the USNTDP

And if Quinn is fired, it doesn't mean Reirden would be the next head coach or if he is, it'll only be in the interim

Mike Sullivan a year from now is the perfect fit here if a change is going to be made.

i would agree. Although I’d love to see Laviolette as well.

either way our coaching staff just doesn’t measure up. Just doesn’t. I can’t imagine Quinn here passed this season.

Not surprised at all Reirden got canned. The Caps will be better next year from a coaching perspective if they go with a veteran head coach.

Quinn's been coaching a long time. Not all coaching experience relates to the NHL. Until Gallant landed his Vegas gig he'd had one good season in Florida.
