Man, McDavid always leaves me in awe...

the 2nd goal he scored was ridiculous.. IMO easily the greatest offensive talent ever

It just amazes me how every other team in the nhl- young, old, and in between, are so much better at the Rangers at taking the puck up the ice and shooting it on net. From my eye test, (use all the stats you want to refute this) the Rangers biggest issue for years is they pass way too frickin much, and shoot too little. Which is why I detest everything about a player like Lettieri, but at least this guy likes to shoot the puck.

Kirby Dach is so good, and he gets Toews to mentor him. Sky is the limit for him. (I love Kakko too, and people will say BPA, but Dach is a center.) In these times it would've been nice to see J Hughes play too, and how he handles playoffs, and get the top 3 drafted prospects debate going again.

wait you disagreeing?

who has ever been more talented than McDavid?

Right off the top of my head, Gretzky, Lemieux and Orr were other-wordly in their talents.

I mean there's the curve, and there's whatever seperate plain of existence those three were on in comparison to their peers.

I think McDavid compares well to Sidney Crosby, and is certainly a generational talent, but most talented or greatest offensive talent ever? Eh, not quite.

Yeah, this is basically how I see it.

McDavid is the best among his peers. Gretzky (and also Lemieux) had no peers

I feel like there's a fairly consistent top 4 among most people: Gretzky, Lemieux, Howe and Orr. There's some variation on the order, but that's probably the most consistent list of names you'd see on the Hockey Mount Rushmore.

When you get to 5 or 6, you start getting into Rocket Richard, Bobby Hull, and Beliveau. Beyond those players, your hear names like Sawchuck, Harvey, Lafleur, Messier, etc. in the 7-15 range. The further down the list you go, the more variation you see.

But if we're talking offense and pure talent, we're probably focused on Gretz, Lemieux, Orr, Howe and Richard being the most common names at the top of the list.

Guys like Crosby and McDavid have the potential to stake their claim in the top 10 when all is said and done. But I don't see either budging names in the top 3 or 4. Maybe they challenge that 5-7 range. It depends on a lot of factors, and it's going to be somewhat subjective.

But what makes the players at the very top of the mountain the best of the best is that there's significantly less subjectivity at work.

For me it's Gretzky and Orr, then you drop down a little to Lemieux and Howe.

I don't put Howe up there with Orr, Gretzky, and Lemieux. Those three guys are on their own plane of existence. Howe was a great player but I'd put him with the likes of Messier.

I think Howe's contributions to the game as a whole and the fact that he played in 5 different decades (although this is a bit misleading since the last decade was a few months) put him ahead of Messier and Jagr etc.

Howe in terms of popularity was the Gretzky of his time.

I think we almost forget just how far ahead of his peers Howe was. He literally closed the gap, caught and passed the previous all-time leader while they were both still playing.

In those days, hitting 40 goals and 90 points was like hitting 70 and 150 in the 1980s. It almost meant that you might have triple the amount of goals and double the amount of points as the guy who was the 15th highest scorer in the league.

To put that kind of differential in perspective, that would be like leading the league with close to 150 points in 2020.

While I have him in a tier below Lemieux and Gretzky, I think for his time, he probably wasn't as far off from them as we sometimes think.

This game has been ugly for the Jackets, one of those old Torts Rangers playoff games where Hank got peppered to death.
