I wouldn’t say mediocre, but I also don’t think it’s near the start of the impact the Yotes we’re looking for after making such a significant investment.

Watching the reaction to another 10-15 goal, 50-ish point season could be interesting.
I know you're posting this because you heard something, and I (and the rest of us) appreciate it. My guess however is that Chayka's ask is going to be very high. At least higher than my proposal of a former cast off that was a "throw in" with the 7th overall for Stepan and Raanta and a small add.

I don't think that Arizona trades Keller without getting a blue chip prospect or impact top 6 player back. I can't see Kreider (even with an extension) doing it. Buchnevich? The Rangers would have to add mightily. A player like Andersson or Howden would fit a player that Arizona would like to a "T".

Keller would look really nice behind Zibanejad centering the second line. I'm just not sure that a package of Buchnevich and Howden or Andersson gets it done. Would they even want DeAngelo with Soderstrom not too far away? Never know. But the potential for another Rangers/Arizona deal is there.

There are early grumblings and the Rangers will be closely monitoring. That’s where it’s at right now.

Kreider is/would be a completely separate issue from that.

From the Rangers standpoint they’d also have to see how certain salary elements play out over the next 9 months, if it even got to that point.

And this is exactly why I didn't like the Shattenkirk buy out. The $7+ million in dead space from his and Girardi's buy outs may prohibit Gorton from potentially making a move like acquiring a player like Keller for prospects and a pending RFA or two to improve the team over the summer.

There's a lot of money coming off the books Summer 2021, but I start to wonder if Gorton's seat starts to get a little warm if the Rangers finish with another top 5 pick in June. I'm not saying his seat will be burning hot by 2021, but I would imagine that the rumblings will start this summer and persist to 2021 if there still isn't playoff hockey by then.

As he was the past two summers, Gorton is going to need to get creative to make improvements to the team this coming summer. I'm in no way expecting him to be as busy this coming summer as he was this past summer, but I really do think that a trade needs to be made for a second line center because none of the young guys have grabbed the brass ring as of yet. Gorton still has lots of work to do, and even this summer, will have a lot of trade capital to go out and get his guy. Buchnevich, DeAngelo, any defensive prospect not named Miller, and maybe Lundkvist will be available to land that player. I wouldn't include Lundkvist if I absolutely had to, but if Chayka calls and asks for Lundkvist and Andersson for Keller (for example), I think I'd pull the trigger.

Completely unrelated thought, but what's Markus Naslund up to these days? He needs to give Marc Staal a phone call in six months about retiring with some dignity.

For what it’s worth, be it monitoring how Keller does in Arizona, or having an interest in Jost, I think the Rangers are looking for someone who could slide in behind Panarin and not necessarily Zibanejad.

Not getting the vibe that Kreider stays. It feels an awful lot like Hayes last season.

Arizona gave Keller an 8 year $57MM contract this summer. He is going nowhere.

They are hoping Hayton steps up and becomes the number one center that they (and Keller) desperately need.

And even though he is not lighting it up right now, he is playing pretty well. The goals will come.

Isn't it a pretty known fact by now that Kreider is gone? There has literally been zero indication the Ranger's want to extend any type of offer to him.

On a different note, how about we dont play the Islanders until Jan. 13th! Maybe their winning streak will be over by then.
And then we play them 3x in 9 days. Unbelievable.

Interestingly enough, I’ve heard a few times, from multiple people going back a little ways, that the decision to give him that contract was not unanimous and continues to be a tension point there.

I continue to find that interesting.

Why does it always feel like everyone in Arizona’s front office is always pulling in different directions

Because that’s a component of the culture they’ve created over the years, and not a culture they’ve totally shaken.

Having said that, teams keep an eye on those types of things. Smart teams treat it like a doctor who finds something on an x-ray - they note it, track it over time, and see if it warrants action.

That 2018 draft, i wanted Brady.

Its funny, its already very clear the top-4 picks were *really* the top for players. I know its early still, but its interesting.

Kotkaniemi should not have been a top-4 pick. Just because he played 91 games already, doesn't mean he's better than Quinn Hughes who was in college for a year

Tampa, Toronto and Boston in the same division. That's insane man. Those 3 teams are all contenders imo
With current roster I would say Toronto is a tier below the other two because of D or lack thereof. Also no grit. Don’t really see them as true contender unless some improvements are made at trade deadline.

Toronto's D seems fine to me. Is Boston's defense really that much better than Toronto? I would say McAvoy and Reilly are comparable

Tampa seems to have a very clear edge on D with Hedman and McDonagh

Toronto's D next year will be interesting. They aren't bringing back all of their UFA's, so who stays?

Tampa, to me, still has the same problem - they look like they’re playing an all-star exhibition and could be quite vulnerable to a team that comes at them hard and heavy.

I don't trust Tampa at all

That team is a classic case of "regular season champs". And then they turn into bums in the playoffs

I think their offense masks a lot of play, and players, that have serious flaws and questionable odds of being the answer to unlocking a championship.

Maybe it all comes together for them. But I see a lot of similar cracks being just under the surface of a new coat of paint.

Barrie is overrated. Muzzin is good and they have some guys in Sandin, Dermott and Lindgren that are interesting but I don’t think they stack up to Krug, Carlo, Chara and Grelczyk.

Tampa, with McD and Hedman, Sergachev, Celarhik, Coburn and Shattenirk is very solid.

It makes way more sense than getting a center.

Clearly they are going to be feeding Chytil those 2C minutes at this point. We clearly lack wing depth at the NHL level. Ideally Fast is on the 4th line. Ideally Haley isn't playing, or Smith for that matter. Lemieux is slotted into a spot he may not be able to excel in. Maybe Strome moving to wing helps this a little.

Once Kreider goes, that winger depth is getting significantly worse with no immediate replacement to move up the lineup, unless a young center moves to the wing.
