There continues to be whispers of a sort of “franchise player” designation that would not count toward the cap, or count at a reduced rate.

Having said that, it doesn’t have a ton of momentum behind it right now.

Dude that would be killer. Like one guy in every given year, tag can be moved every 2-3 years, something like that...

it isn't fair how an entire team needs to be dismantled because of a hard cap

they would basically have to change the entire system. letting teams go over the cap on certain players just means the players lose more $$ in escrow

The Max contract rules would have to be in place -- something like a percentage of the cap or the midway of the cap

The inability to move that tag often would lock that down though. Players would love it because you could effectively give a player who doesn't have NMC rights due to contract age to get those. So its a concession for both teams. I like using a "Franchise player $ amount"

Marner turned down other offers during the summer according to his agent Darren Dreger--err, I mean Ferris.

"There were two presented to him in the summer, two opportunities which he declined and he told me 'Darren, I don't want to sign them, I want to be a Leaf,'" Ferris told First Up on TSN Radio 1050 Toronto on Monday. "So, we declined both of those opportunities and I know Kyle (Dubas) was aware of one them, the team had actually told him that they had made the overture to Mitch and there was a very strong likelihood there were more that would be presented once the season started as you know, the cap number gets set and makes it more difficult for a team to match.

I count 11 skaters out of 18 who either will make the roster or are expected to make a serious push.

Looks like you're the one who doesn't know what they're talking about.

It's 8 or 9 to 11 depending, either way that's 1/2 the team, some not even starters, and doesn't include Taylor Hall, Nico Hischier, Kyle Palmieri, etc... (e.g. the star players) and many starting defenders. Just a silly comment on your part, but whatever.

Curious though, what's your prediction for the Rangers this year, is it going to be a, "really tough year" for the Rangers too?

11 is more than half. Either way, its a helluva lot more than what the Bruins threw out there.

I don't expect the playoffs for the Rangers, but I anticipate that they'll be finishing ahead of the Devils for the foreseeable future.

your move kakko...now needs to score 2 on wed

I remember Yamamoto lighting up in the pre-season in both his years. Then I remember Laine scoring 0 goals in his first pre-season. I think to myself... "Doesn't matter". Kakko can score zero goals during pre-season, main thing is that he gets used to the pace.

Obviously preseason doesn’t matter. It was more of a joke about how playing for the rangers and devils everything that Hughes and kakko do for the entire careers will be compared against each other

It isn't Hughes' fault that the Bruins didn't play a very good team. Best Bruins forward was Chris Wagner. Vaakanainen is their best D prospect but otherwise Kampfer their most experienced D and Alex Petrovic. That's pretty putrid. Not sure what Boston was doing here---trying to throw the game? It wouldn't surprise me if more than half the roster they played last night were cut and sent to Providence today. Just saying. Basically it was a sparring partner that they dressed last night.

Honka is holding out because he doesn't want to play in Dallas. Maenalanen, IDK what is going on there.

Tony D, what's the hold up? Unless you're angling for a trade, your offer isn't going to get appreciably better.
