Around the NHL - Part XLIII

I read somewhere this week that Noah Dobson name was mentioned in trades . I wonder if they are talking contract these days over there ? Many thought he was a shoo in for 9-10 million....well I wondered on that . He has dropped half a point a game this season . What are your thoughts on Dobson and his next deal ? It might get messy . I keep telling his friends here he should get out of there as fast as he can.

He had a tough Nov point wise but seems to have bounced back since. May end up with 50 points still this season.
 
Dobson is Carlson type. He can move the puck very well and is a big threat from the blue line, and his defense is fair enough - and young enough to continue improving. But unlike guys like Karlsson who were SO offensively dominant that simply having them on the ice 25 minutes a night meant the puck was mostly not in your end for those 25 minutes, which means you tilt the ice significantly enough to be a Norris nominee, even if your defense isn’t the bread and butter of your game. Guys like Carlson, while picking up a nomination here or there, have never been true Norris contenders because despite putting up numbers, they don’t tilt the ice and control play for nearly half a game the way guys like Karlsson do. It’s rare for a “purely” offensive D man to be able to impact the game so significantly that without being truly “good” at defense, they still mitigate goals against purely by the fact that when they’re on the ice the puck is rarely in their zone. Carlson is in that other group; good D who is a big time offensive threat and also decent defensively, but not a genuine game changer on either side of the ice. That’s Dobson. He’s a very good offensive D. He’s not remotely in bonafide 1D territory.

The thing about both is… (drum roll)… it’s a team sport. There isn’t a universe in existence where John Carlson’s peak, nor career, surpasses Erik Karlsson’s. Period. Karlsson could play 25 minutes per night and force a bad Sens team to win. Carlson could be the #2 shooting option after Ovie on the PP and win a Cup on a deep team lead by the guy who is about to break the all time goal scoring record. It’s pretty miraculous how that works, eh?

Wait, wait… Binnington, Crawford, Murray, Huet were all better than Lundqvist. Because, and I quote (you): “the thing about Lundqvist is, he’s never won. The thing about Binnington is, he has.”

Good, now that I typed something moronic, we’re on more even footing.

i never said carlsons peak exceeded karlssons. ek one of the most skilled defensemen we've seen. but i do think he his lack of defense has limited his winning.

Carlson had a monster playoff run in his Cup year. Doesn't make him "better" than EK by any stretch, but it serves to raise the question - what kind of player *wins*?

It doesn’t raise any question.

I watched Erik Karlsson nearly drag a team that had no business getting out of the first round to game 7 of the ECF. No iteration of John Carlson in any timeline would ever be capable of that.

The type of player who wins is the one who has more good players around them.

Fun fact: both players are and have pretty much always been shitty defensive players. John also is and has always been worse in that regard. I never understood how he got the reputation as a 2 way defender.
 
Kakko PPG, left alone up front. Dennis Gilbert (who?) cross checks Kaapo after the goal Kakko hits back. Result, referee becomes part of the goal celebration. :laugh:

Freakin guy stands still like Ovie THE ENTIRE PP - no one on the PK team even acknowledges his presence.

Meanwhile we have Zib skating all over the place and by the time he gets the puck in that spot he’s covered by both the d-man and the goalie. Puzzling.
 
People couldn't wait for Kakko to put up slightly above average points to scream bloody murder. You'd think he has 10 points in 7 games and not 7 points in 10 games. He's not Colton Orr, he's going go through stretches where he scores a little. Let it f***ing go. We didn't trade Gretzky.

Classic damage control. Kakko isnt Gretzky but the trade surely shows how f***ed up the organization is. Trade will look absolutely horrific in few years. People here speak about how Kakko got his chance in top lines, yeah thats true but you need to build the team around likes of Lafreniere and Kakko.
