You win these two games in the division and I think we will you’re next two are against a terrible Detroit team you can really make up some ground. Very doable. The

Detroit games are must wins. Cannot lose to that team and have hope to be in it at the end.

Montreal is kicking themselves for losing to that team 3 times. The difference from them being right in it and selling is losing to Detroit.

You think he gets the start tonight?

They were talking about it on the devil's broadcast last night. Korpisalo is hurt and their current backup (under .900 sv% in 73 career AHL games) has never played in the NHL. This is the last game for Columbus before the break, so they probably ride Elvis for another game.

The Rangers record against teams within their own division is 10-3-0. We get up for games against our closest rivals. We still have 15 more in the remaining 36 games. If that trend continues we could make it very close on a playoff run. But anyway our D has improved a bit from last year but it still needs to tighten up a bit. In the years to come that should happen naturally. The other part of that equation though is the Rangers D is very mobile and attack oriented and if we deepen out our forward depth--get enough that our 4th line can become decent contributors then that attacking style of our D should be even more productive.

You make a good point that the Rangers get up for teams within the division. We also seemingly play our best hockey vs the more elite teams in the league outside the division as Rangers have wins vs Boston, Tampa, Toronto, Winnipeg, Nashville, Vegas and Colorado thus far during the first half of the season.

That said, I just think there are too many teams better than us who are signifcanty ahead of us who are in our way of making a playoff spot.

In the Metro alone you have 3 locks already...Caps, Penguins and yes the Philes are going to make it in despite their mini-slump they are in. Nipping at their heels are the Jackets, Canes and Flyers. One if not two of those teams are getting into the dance....just the way it is.

Than you go over to the Atlantic, if we can concede the Bruins, Lightning and either Florida or Toronto are in either/or, you still have the loser of the Panther/Leaf battle for 3rd in the Atlantic as a very viable WC entry. And you even have teams like the Sabres and Canadians who have more points than we do tho we do have some games in hand on them.

Bottom line, as I said previously, sure I'd love for the Rangers to make the playoffs...who wouldn't, but it's not happening IMO when you realistically look at the landscape here in the East.

If we can just hang around the playoff bubble, that will be good enough for me for this year and I'd bet secretly and deep down, it would be satisfying for Gorton and JD as well.

Now next year the playoffs are a whole different story...a whole new animal. Next year there will be no doubt that there will be expectations to not just hang around the playoff bubble but burst thru it and win a WC at the worst if not win one of those top 3 spots in the Metro.

I'm not talking challenging for a Cup but playoffs should certainly be a realistic goal next year. Cup contention will hopefully come maybe 2 years from now 3 at the most.

But yes expectations next year will rise exponentially as they should as the team should be better. But for now, at least for me, I'm more than satisfied where the team is at in the scheme of things!

I think you're correct. The wheels would have to fall off at least two teams in the Patrick division for it to be possible. That said I think the Rangers are capable of pressuring for a spot at least into mid-March maybe even late March. I also think we've been getting better as the season has progressed. One of our main issues is not stringing winning streaks together. A couple of say 5 game winning streaks and the picture changes. When half or more of your team is under 25 though that's really not bad and considering that this team could survive easily without its 3 oldest players--Lundqvist, Staal and Smith the future of this team looks extremely good.

We're playing above .500 and we've scored more goals than we've given up and we're easily the youngest team in the league........and yeah often enough we beat top teams.

If we concede 5 teams are locks for playoffs(I'll leave the Islanders out for now tho I think they are getting in someway somehow). The 5....Caps,Penguins, Bruins, Lightning and either the Leafs or Panthers...I'll use the Panthers for this.

Unless you tell me not just one but two or three of either the Isles, Flyers, Canes,Jackets, Leafs go absolutely rubbish and tank the rest of the season while we go on a tear where we play .600 ball, I don't see anyway we get into the playoffs.

Sure it will be nice to have hope for it which goes to my point about us hanging around the playoff bubble which would be great for the kiddies. To actually make the dance tho? I duno bro...that's asking for alot to go right and I do mean ALOT!!

It would take alot of intervention from the hockey gods all on our behalf to help specifically us. Also other than this one time when the gods helped us get the #2 overall last year to get Kakko, when do these gods I speak of ever come to our rescue or help us out? Exactly...not often or never is the correct answer...lol

Man, Matt Murray is a shell of himself.

I would not be shocked if the guy in the net for Boston today is on Pittsburgh next season. Halak with that roster seems perfect for each other.

Only goalie to win 2 Cups as a rookie. Probably also the worst goalie to win 2 Cups

Boston down 1 and Pittsburgh playing beautiful keep away. Until Malkin. Passes cross center ice (a no no) intercepted by the ONE guy you dont want to give it away to. Pasta man. Wished he would have put that blast in......just so Malkin could have been the GOAT. And, not in a good way.

Ahh yes the "Patrick Division". That brings back fond memories of when we had the Prince of Wales and the Campbell conferences and when we had the 1-8 playoff system(please go back to that system...I beg of you Bettman...I know you read our board here).

I used to like when Chris Berman would describe any game between the Lions,Vikings, Packers or Bears as a "Battle in the Norris Division"...lol

David Backes, waived, sent down. Age: 35. I can't help but think this could be Chris Kreider when he's that age. For now though, he's playing great.

Haha, losing to the rangers really ****ed with their heads.

Maybe we did. That team on paper really isn't all that impressive. I mean seriously, other than Barzal, who on their team would be a lock for a 1st or 2nd line role on our team? Maybe Anders Lee but that's about it and even he is questionable to replace any of our top 6.

It's their Trotz based system which is so impressive and they really do have a lock down defensive corps. And that 4th line of their when Clutterbuck is healthy with him, Czikis and Martin might be the best 4th line in the league not just this year but any year...seriously they are that good!!

I think so long as they don't get a Panarin type offensive threat, the Islanders will never be good enough to get past a round tops in the playoffs.

It's that reason why I always say, as great as it was for us to sign Panarin, it was equally awesome that the Islanders didn't get him because if you put Panarin on that team with the rest of that lineup, that team not only wins a few rounds in the playoffs but also becomes a threat to win a Cup.

So thank you thank you thank you Artemi for wanting to be in the bright lights of Manhattan rather than the suburbs...lol

O yeah.

He put it to them for sure, we all know that it was widely reported they offered possibly $1,000,000 more.

Here's a question. No doubt Kane is a Hall of Famer the day he hangs up his skates. But what about his goomba Toews whose #'s at least to me they don't, warrant Hall of Fame inclusion.

There's not a chance Toews doesn't get in.

Captain for 1st Cup for Chicago in 50 some odd years, 3 total Cups as captain
Second youngest captain to win a Cup at 22 y/o
Conn Smythe
Youngest player to join the Triple Gold Club
Whole career with one team (so far, but don't really see that changing)

What's wrong with his #s? .86 PPG through nearly 1000 games in the regular season, basically the same in the post-season through 128 games.

Maybe they'll make a separate Hall for him within the Hall called the Hall of Intangibles?

You know now that I think about it a bit more, you do make some good points. And considering the Hall lately has been inducting players like Guy Carbonneau, Vaclav Nedomonsky and heck even Sergie Zubov who I love, I'm not sure he's a hall of famer tho, your probably right that Toewes does get in.

Well done my friend...you changes my mind...:)

He'll get in.

As for Kane I think he'll go past Modano on all time points table amongst US skaters.

Toews will get in.

Considering he's always been a guy who is about more than the points, he'll still likely top 400 goals and 1,000 points.

But full disclosure, I'm also someone who thinks guys like Tkachuk and Brind'amour deserve to be in the Hall of Fame as well. So some of the above is definitely influenced by that mindset.

The NHL had Toews as a top 100 player of all time over Malkin, I personally don’t really think he’s a good enough player for the HOF, but it’s basically been decided that he’s getting in
