I wonder how many more games Jarmo K is gonna allow Torts to be behind that bench ? They can't for his own job ...afford to miss the post season . If they lose the first one to Penguins....I say he is gone . Is it a situation where they made too many changes ? That back to back s a big one . They also have a wicked tough schedule left .

The current NHL playoff format isn't up for discussion at the GM meetings but it still isn't better than the old one. If the playoffs started today, San Jose would be facing Vegas in the first round and we'd see Toronto-Boston again in the first round as well. 3 of the top 5 teams in the NHL would be guaranteed to be eliminated by the end of the 2nd round with this format. Just to ensure division rivalries in the early rounds for TV ratings. San Jose would have faced non-division opponents Minnesota or Dallas in the old format.

This system has been garbage from the moment it was implemented.

Every year we see crap like this. Its not even speculation anymore. This playoff system is demonstrably unfair

They have two elite centers and are no where closer to the playoffs from when they last made it to the playoffs. In fact you could say they've gone backwards.
But lets hope they find a way to finish ahead of us. I think last year they had to win their final game in the shootout to finish ahead of us.

Incase anybody missed it, Jason Pominville made a Patrik Stefan level f***-up last night. Hilarious, except for the fact it would have been nice for Buffalo to get a point out of the game.

I give Pominville a bit more credit that Stefan. You can't react in real time to a flub like that. It was more bad luck than anything. Patrick Stefan's play was brought upon by arrogance

I’m rooting for Columbus. I like to see a team load up and give it a shot. If they don’t make it, all those soft, ball-less GMs like Toronto’s will feel vindicated. I like the cut of Columbus’ jib.
Do you think there would be any chance of Torts getting fired if they lose their next 3 games this week...Buffalo and a back to back with Penguins ? If they lose to Sabres....the GM going to have to really take a hard look to get them righted....Columbus has a hard schedule of opponents ahead . Those Pen games ARE HUGE !!!

I don’t think he does. They play the worst team in hockey tonight in Newark so let’s say they lose big I could change my mind lol.
Yeah those pens games are like playoff games 15 games out. Should be fun

So this started bugging me last night for some reason:
When the officials decide not to call icing when the puck is shot in from before the red line, do they "wave it off" because the action of the official vaguely resembles a wave, or do they "waive it off" because they are providing a waiver (exemption) to the call being made in that particular case?

Haha! Had a similar question come up at work questioning “to waver” (like, vacillate) and “to waiver”. In reply to your question I’d say it’s “waive” but who knows :)

I’d be amazed but weirder things have happened. Didn’t they just get rid of DuClair per Torts’ request? I doubt he’s on the hot seat. But maybe. Desperate times do call for desperate measures.

Well...they better soon start winning some games or likely Jarmo and Torts will both be gone if they miss the playoffs . Those Pen games this week will be a test as to who can turn the other cheek the most times . The retaliatory calls will kill one of them for sure and one has to figure the Pens will always be the darling of the officials . Maybe they have their own ref lined up for at least one game....the ref that allows them to have garner 80% of the possible points which was on here a couple of weeks after the Ranger/Pen game . I would not be mad if Dubi was to bang Cindy around some ....I probably would enjoy it .

It's "wave." It's written that way in every publication and the NHL uses it as well in their print material:
Attainable pass rule wiped out -- The NHL erased the attainable pass language from the icing rule, requiring officials to wave off icing only if a player touches the puck.
The attainable pass rule used to give the linesman discretion to determine if the pass could have been touched. If he felt it could have been he would wave off the icing.
Hybrid icing tops list of rule changes for 2013-14

Also, here, they use "wave-off" repeatedly: Video Rulebook: Game Flow | NHL.com - The National Hockey League - Video Rulebook

I could provide more but it's definitely "wave." :)
