The big difference here is that in speed skating, speed is all that matters so you automatically get the best in the world competing, whereas in the NHL All Star game you have the best overall players, not necessarily the fastest so it's closer.
Mcjesus is the fastest tho...it's kinda hard to argue with that.

Eh. He’s the fastest all-star. But the skills competition is hugely flawed in this way. They really need to have individual team competitions and then bring the players with the top-5 times in those out to the ASG, just for the skills comp. Same deal for hardest shot.

It’s possible that McDavid would still win, but until they do that, I don’t consider him the true fastest. It’s ridiculous that Hagelin never competed in one of these, for example.

Years ago, they had Hagelin and Greening in just for the skills competition. They don't do that anymore

I had forgotten about that, but Hagelin and Greening weren’t there specifically because of their skating. They were there as part of the rookie showcase. If Hagelin wasn’t a rookie, he wouldn’t have been there. And Hagelin only got the invite because Henrique was injured. That’s different from what I’m saying.

You can swap out Hagelin’s name for Kreider if you want to make my point more accurate.

By the way, when you look at all the records, Hagelin’s time in the “preliminary” round of that year beats all of them. And Greening’s in that round was even better. Although they were both half track, so the turns weren’t nearly as long.

But yeah, the point still stands. McDavid was the fastest at the ASG. Not necessarily the fastest in the NHL.

When you look at speed skating, what started this debate, it is all about speed. So you end up with the fastest in the world, and in those situations, you see different results between the two genders.

I think mcdavid is syhr fastest player in the nhl...or thereabouts...maybe aa from Detroit could give him a run for his money.

Kreider is fast in a straight line but once he has to curl around the goal I wonder how his speed would take a hit...he's never seemed particularly explosive with his crossovers

For some reason I decided to watch the all-star skills competition. I gotta say the crowd that was there, when the players were introduced, was dope!

They respected the players that deserved so, when Hank came ... dude I got goosebumps, what an ovation. None of the players got that much.

Letang got booed the f*** out, as was Crosby. Loved it.

edit: and Hank wins the competition! lol

I think that when a player has "been around" like Hank, and specifically because he is in another conference (where less hate is) then.......he will get deserved recognition. Lots of Rangers fans in San Jose? Regardless, he is well respected throughout the NHL.

Back on thread topic (somewhat).......is Chiarelli a candidate for unemployment? Just wondering. Does the gov't have to shell out $$$ for him? Or did he do something wrong with his employer, to not deserve it? Does trading Hall for Larson become in line with going against company policy? Like losing?

1) Unknown how unemployment works in Canada.

2) He's still going to collect paychecks from the Oilers for whatever duration his contract was with them (like how AV is still collecting paychecks from the Rangers)

3) For the bolded, no. Being stupid is not going against company policy. If it was, the entire EDM front office would have to resign.

I have Canadian relatives. I can ask.

I think GMs, like coaches, are relieved of their duties, rather than fired. They are still under contract and still get paid

Even if a coach resigns totally on his own, he still generally has to secure permission from his former club before he can sign somewhere else. Like if some other attractive job opened up, Quinn couldn't just quit here and then sign there without the Rangers signing off. A lot of times there are buyouts involved, where a coach can buy his way out of a contract. But just quitting doesn't generally get you out of the deal. Just like firing a guy doesn't get the team off the hook.

This just happened in the NFL/NCAA with Kliff Kingsbury. He had to pay a buyout of $150K to USC to be able to go to Arizona.

Yes they are markedly different results. 2.5 seconds may not seem like that much difference but in the world of speed skating (especially sprint distances), where time is measured in .01 seconds, it's huge.

....not that it takes away anything from the female competitors or their accomplishments as they all kick ass.
