how would you have felt had Kovalchuk 'voluntarily retired' from Boston 5 + years ago, instead of New Jersey.... would you STILL WANT him in Boston knowing that?

Maybe, but for sure I would definitely still prefer him to Rick Nash if I had to pick between them, which it seems the Bruins are doing. At the end of the day, none of it is personal for me. He's still a good player and we would better off with him in the lineup than not.

NN has 101 goals over the last 5 seasons, so he’s good for 20 a season roughly. He’s under contract at $5.25m for the next 4 years. He’s also going to cost you a fair amount of assets if you deal for him.

Obviously, there is a 9 year age difference, but if you think you can get 20-30 from Kovalchuk, pay him $6m for the next three years, and he doesn’t cost you anything but Cap space...why wouldn’t you make that move instead?

Yea I'm all set with 5.25 for 20 goals and average defensive play. Not much of a physical game to talk about.

If he was drafted in the 3rd round I'm sure no one would be clamoring for him.

Were you ok with Wheeler signing with Boston after he stiffed ARI?

Were you ok with Vesey coming to Boston.

And...he didn’t voluntarily retire from Boston. It sucks for NJ, but who cares?

On the rumors about Dougie Hamilton being shopped, Brad Treliving says this:

“No,” Treliving told The Calgary Sun when asked if the team had put Hamilton on the block. “There’s lots of stuff that’s reported at this time. We don’t comment on that stuff. When I hear about that stuff, it usually comes out late at night when people have been into the red wine…we’re not going to talk about what we may or may not do, but we’re not shopping people.

Pretty sure in regards to Kovalchuck contract being retired was a favour for NJ at the time being one of those "illegal" contracts... sort of how Hossa developed this "skin rash" and retired.

I also vaguely recall something about him wanting to bring up his family in Russia- I think his two sons were infant/toddler age at the time. It's really hard to find fault with that, unless you are looking for reasons to dislike the player.

Well considering there were many reasons why ownership wanted Kovachuk to 'retire' in New Jersey. That was more of a mutually beneficial agreement

Disappointed Kovalchuk isn’t coming here, but for me, it’s a year too long and about a million too much.
