Vegas big time overpaid for Tatar in picks and took on a pricey deal

He’s a good player but didn’t fit there

I think Montreal as they rebuild made a very smart deal

They can come in last with Pacioretty or without him

Great point. Go's for Tatar as well.

Why not package him again this yr at the deadline. I doubt you'll get the package McPhee gave up last Yr but if you could grab another 1st and/or top prospect. Bergevin, if he's still around then just might of saved his job.

McPhee has the unique ability to end up with a significant net loss in assets over the course of several deal yet still come out ok out of sheer dumb luck.

Montreal got a decent package I guess but I think Tatar is toast and Vegas gets the best player in the deal.

Thanfully that 2nd wasn't a 1st. The thing that sucks about this trade is that while MTL is going to suck for a little bit, they have a deep center pool now. Who knows where they land this coming draft, but they now have Kotkaniemi -- Suzuki -- Poehling to build with down the middle. They went from having no NHL center depth and really no answers to having easily 2 potential top line center prospects and while Poehling doesn't have top line potential at the moment, he has middle 6 potential. I hope Price keeps them in a lot of games this season, and they don't sniff #1 overall because Jack Hughes in MTL would be an awful situation moving forward

true on McPhee.

though he's still well ahead of the game thanks to getting Marchessault and Smith for a 4th round pick

So I wonder who captains Montreal now...
I'd put money on Weber. Only other guy I could see would be Gallagher, but I think thats less likely.

I don't hate this trade for montreal nearly as much as I wish I did.

If Tatar returns to form, they definitely could get a 1st or higher end prospect. If he doesn't, obviously they won't get that, but he'd still be a decent depth forward that could land them a little more in the Pacioretty return.

Tatar is 27 and coming off a career worst year. I could see him being another Loui Eriksson where he had a couple real good years as a young guy and then kind of fizzled out.

I am confident that the Habs can ruin the careers of each of those elite prospects.

Suzuki alone has the potential to make this as bad as the Foresberg deal that McPhee made. He's going all in and he got the best player now, long term I don't think so.

I can't stand Maxi but Suzuki has a long way to go to be as good as Patches was and could be again out of Montreal. I think this is a good deal for Vegas, the aesthetics of dealing Tatar, who they did give up too much for, don't look great but McPhee at least corrected that mistake by moving him out. If Pacioretty resigns this is a good deal for Vegas, the Tatar deal wasn't.

I like this for both teams honestly. McPhee has overpaid in two trades now, but they are in win-now mode, so it's not a huge issue at the moment.

MTL's issue is they refuse to go all in on a rebuild that they clearly need, which as a Bruins fan, is fine with me. Let them suck for eternity in mediocrity.
