Who makes a trade at 1am on a Sunday/Monday night? I woke up 20 minutes ago for work and I wanted to check the Packers-Bears score before getting ready. I see the Pacioretty trade tweet. I thought it was fake. McPhee gave up so picks including a #1 for Tatar who has a big contract. He also trades a former #1 and a future 2nd for Pacioretty. McPhee will give Pacioretty a big contract extension. They must be out of Karlsson now. The situation between the Habs and Pacioretty was bad. He had his charity golf tournament in Montreal two weeks ago. All of the Habs brass attended. It was odd.

Vegas: We won't trade Nick Suzuki for Karlsson
Also Vegas: We will trade Nick Suzuki for a worse player
Suzuki had a bit of a disappointing D+1 season TBH, he shouldn't have been untouchable in the first place. When there are no legit superstars in the CHL to put the others into perspective, the top forwards that are there seem to get pretty overrated IMO. Suzuki isn't even Galchenyuk-tier, hardly a can't-miss prospect. Neither is Cody Glass for that matter.

You would assume Patches re-signs with Vegas. The LA trade didn't go through because he wouldn't sign.

Suzuki is a good get, and Vegas getting out of Tatar's contract is good for them.

I mis-remembered. It was Glass they didn't want to part with for Karlsson.

But your point stands and I agree with you. Neither players are who you refuse to move for a superstar like Karlsson.

Not so much around the NHL, but more around the world-related:

Espoo United (formerly Espoo Blues) declared for bankruptcy again this summer and is now playing under the name Kiekko Espoo. 2 Finnish techs are visiting this week and they just told me haha. Completely missed it. 2 bankruptcies in 2 years.

Anybody else think VGKs success last season was in spite of George McPhee?

Before the season started, almost everyone thought he could have done better with the expansion draft. His team happened to be really good anyway so people forgot about it. Then he makes a bad deadline deal for Tatar, then overpays for a guy who Montreal has been trying to trade for months.

I can understand Vegas wanting to establish a fan base by having a few good seasons right out of the gate, but they really are mortgaging their future.

a 1st, 2 2nds, a 3rd, and Nick Suzuki for a guy who had 37 points last year.

Pacioretty will most likely be better than that, but not the best asset management.

Pacioretty is at least good insurance for when Wild Bill doesnt shoot 24% again this season. I’d bet that Pacioretty (and Saad) is primed for a big bounce back season. He shot well below his career average last season.

Nothing like beginning a half-assed rebuild when your goalie is 31 years old and just starting his 8/$84m contract.

The Habs are terrible and they're going to be bad for a while and I love it.
Especially when said goalie just had one of the worst seasons a starter has had in the NHL since 07-08 (literally worst in the league in 17-18).

It's a shame we aren't really in a position to trade for Gallagher though, I've badly wanted him on the Rangers for quite a while and he has one of the best contracts in the league to boot.

Was gonna say this. Without looking at what they paid for Tatar...this trade is a homerun for them imho. Patches is a consistent 30 goal a year guy, they'll have him on their 2nd line. Patches has had to carry the Habs offensively year in and year out.

Habs got worse, knights got better.

It's rather interesting that two players I've considered underrated (and therefore wanted the Rangers to acquire, in the abstract at least) finally got traded this summer; Pacioretty and Skinner. It will be interesting to see how they do in their new environments.

I want to like this post but I hate Gallagher so I can't.

I've come to believe that it's Gallagher that has been stirring the drink 5v5 at le Centre Bell all these years, though Pacioretty is the better point scorer and certainly no chump when it comes to driving play himself.

So overall what’s the haul that Vegas traded for patches? (Tatar trade included) makes the old Nash trade seem like a steal lol

I'd assume out completely? Can they afford another giant swing like this without locking him up long term?
There's always ways to make it work if that's what they want to do. Their cap situation isn't that bad. Have about $9m free right now, so could easily add EK this year. Next year will be trickier if they want to lock-up both Karlsson's and Patches. But they have movable money. That MAF extension is going to hurt, though.

Suzuki was a 13th overall pick, so they've basically traded 2 1st's, 2 2nd's, and a 3rd for Patches.
