Gotta be honest, I like that deal for Ottawa. He’s better than whoever they would have taken at 7. And at his age, he’s right in their window to be competitive. He’s got the eighth most goals over the last three years I think.

Still don’t understand why Chicago would trade him.

I am a fan of Sakic's preference to freely move picks for cost-controlled NHL talent. I also believe that they should be fully prepared to gut their prospect pool to maximize their chances of winning another Cup(s) in the next 3-5 years. And I don't disagree that they can remain contenders by spending less than $5M in net and allocating that money to the rest of the roster.

I do not believe that Georgiev was the guy to execute that plan on. Something must be telling them that their system is a good match for his skillset, but I certainly don't see it. And if they have to pay his qualifying offer to keep him, I think that he underperforms his contract. I think that they could have acquired a comparably 'safe' goalie for less assets and less money.

I'm a fan of this trade as a team that almost certainly has to go through them in the playoffs.

It's a great deal for Ottawa. Even if he doesn't sign there, they have him for 2 years, so they can move him next summer and get a 1st+ if they have to. And with the young forwards they have, I don't know why he wouldn't extend there.

I understand why Chicago would trade him if they could get a return that offsets what they paid for Seth Jones. If you shop him around and someone offers a haul that includes 2-3 high value assets then go for it. If they could have gotten enough assets to essentially make it so they swapped Jones for DeBrincat then I would get it (although I wouldn't like choosing Jones over DeBrincat). But a #7, #39 and a future 3rd? Oof.

And since we're on the topic of laughing at the Hawks, let's revisit that Seth Jones trade. Chicago gave up the #12 in 2021, the #6 in 2022, the #44 in 2021, and Adam Boqvist (selected #8 overall in 2018) in exchange Jones and the #32 pick in 2021. Let's combine the ledger for the 2 trades.

Hawks receive: Seth Jones, #32 in 2021, #7 in 2022, #39 in 2022, and a future 3rd rounder.

Hawks lose: Alex DeBrincat, #12 in 2021, #6 in 2022, #44 in 2021, and Adam Boqvist.

So to swap DeBrincat's raise in 2023 for Jones and his 2022 raise they moved back from 12 to 32 in 2021, moved back from 6 to 7 in 2022, swapped a 2021 2nd for a 2022 2nd, and swapped a 20 year old former #8 overall pick for a 2023 3rd rounder. I'd value DeBrincat more highly than Jones at even money (and I'm not sure that it will take $9.5M and a full NMC to extend Debrincat). But even if you consider the two of them a perfect wash, they still dropped 20 spots in the 1st round and gave up on a 20 year old 1st round pick for a future 3rd rounder.

Stunning. Together, these two trades set their rebuild back by a year. Maybe more.

I’d totally forgotten Chicago wasn’t slated to have a first rounder until this deal because of the Seth Jones trade. I know they have a bundle of others, but still can’t believe they traded for and signed Jones to that deal when this was so clearly a total tear down. Whatever, hope they’re never good again.

I like this deal for Ottawa and where that franchise is trending, but they still need to fill two of the three most important slots - they need a #1 C (I don't think Norris is a #1 but a solid #2) and a starting goalie.

LOL at the Hawks. They're going to be down to Toews, Kane, Jones and a bunch of "Who?" They don't have a goalie under contract that has played in the NHL. They're apparently letting Strome walk for nothing as a UFA at 25 rather than qualify him. What are they even doing?

Apparently Dorion is trying for Weegar in Florida. This has been an entertaining day, that's for sure.

chicago made that trade because they clearly want a player in that area of the draft and already traded their pick to columbus last year lol

i like the trade for both sides but whenever you get a player who is already proven and ready to go, you win the trade right now.

Apparently Dach's name has been in trade discussions too.

It's like they are doing a 2nd rebuild. I don't understand it but hey, I'll take it.

Philly seems like a team without a semblance of a plan. I can (and have) quibbled with moves the Blues have made over the time DA has been here but at least there has always seemed to be a bigger picture or vision for the organization, even if I didn't necessarily agree. Teams like Philly just seem like a ship without a port in a rough sea and the captain is half in the bag already.

Looks like there is some drama in Minnesota with Talbot not as happy with having Fleury back. He's probably not happy his playing time will be reduced

I remember his wife in the playoffs making some posts showing how disappointed the Talbots were with the how Fluery had been the guy for the WIld.
