Gotta be honest, I like that deal for Ottawa. He’s better than whoever they would have taken at 7. And at his age, he’s right in their window to be competitive. He’s got the third most goals over the last three years I think.
Still don’t understand why Chicago would trade him.
I understand why Chicago would trade him if they could get a return that offsets what they paid for Seth Jones. If you shop him around and someone offers a haul that includes 2-3 high value assets then go for it. If they could have gotten enough assets to essentially make it so they swapped Jones for DeBrincat then I would get it (although I wouldn't like choosing Jones over DeBrincat). But a #7, #39 and a future 3rd? Oof.
And since we're on the topic of laughing at the Hawks, let's revisit that Seth Jones trade. Chicago gave up the #12 in 2021, the #6 in 2022, the #44 in 2021, and Adam Boqvist (selected #8 overall in 2018) in exchange Jones and the #32 pick in 2021. Let's combine the ledger for the 2 trades.
Hawks receive: Seth Jones, #32 in 2021, #7 in 2022, #39 in 2022, and a future 3rd rounder.
Hawks lose: Alex DeBrincat, #12 in 2021, #6 in 2022, #44 in 2021, and Adam Boqvist.
So to swap DeBrincat's raise in 2023 for Jones and his 2022 raise they moved back from 12 to 32 in 2021, moved back from 6 to 7 in 2022, swapped a 2021 2nd for a 2022 2nd, and swapped a 20 year old former #8 overall pick for a 2023 3rd rounder. I'd value DeBrincat more highly than Jones at even money (and I'm not sure that it will take $9.5M and a full NMC to extend Debrincat). But even if you consider the two of them a perfect wash, they still dropped 20 spots in the 1st round and gave up on a 20 year old 1st round pick for a future 3rd rounder.
Stunning. Together, these two trades set their rebuild back by a year. Maybe more.
