I'd pay Mackinnon that much if I was the Avs, can't let a guy like that walk, plus he had been on a very team friendly deal, and I think much like our Thomas and Kyrou deals the dollar amount might seem high now, but if the Cap rises as projected the amount will turn into a good value.

Mans just can't stay healthy. Apparently he had bone spurs removed from his ankle and he has a wrist injury. I'm kinda glad we didn't pay the price for him at the deadline

Bill's insane with that reported ask for a guy who's always injured.

The renewed trade talk on the main board is so stupid. JC can’t stay healthy and already has had five surgeries in his very young career.

I want nothing to do with Chychrun.

BA must be pissed about this situation. Then again, some idiot GM will pay BArmy’s price.

I've heard a lot of people describe Mac's new deal as a bargain and 'another' team friendly deal. I think that is a bit much. It's good value in the sense that they locked up the age 28-35 seasons of a guy who is a no-doubt top 5 NHL center. Those players don't become available unless you draft them. Retaining the one you have without completely changing the marketplace is always good value.

But it isn't a discount or less than what anyone should have reasonably expected. He insisted on being the league's highest paid player, which is totally reasonable since McDavid will have held that crown for 5 years when this contract begins. He got a full NMC for the duration of the deal and 85% of the money is paid as signing bonuses. Any team in the league would sign MacKinnon to this contract in a heartbeat, but it is exactly in line with the market value for a team retaining their franchise player. They exactly doubled his current AAV.

The Avs are in good shape to manage the cap around this deal. EJ's $6M coming off the books next summer pays for most of this extension. EJ will either extend at a modest number or he'll be replaced by an ELC or cheap vet. Assuming they fill that roster spot for $1M, that savings covers $5M of the $6.3M raise for Mac. Byram and Newhook will be due raises next summer, but neither have arbitration rights, so they should be able to do cheap 2 year bridge deals and put off the big raises until the cap has started increasing again. The depth will be thinned as it always is when you pay stars, but they aren't at risk of losing another major piece until Toews hits UFA in 2024. And even then, they can keep him if they're willing to ship out a guy or two. The Avs are going to have a hell of a team in front of their budget goaltending for at least the first half of this contract. They'll be contenders every year if the goaltending is adequate.

Yeah, I wouldn't say this deal is bad, it's a fair deal for one of the top players in the game. Anyone saying it's team friendly or a discount when he's the highest player in the game is a bit out to lunch though. Just how McDavid wasn't a team friendly or discount deal either, but everyone would sign it because you would have the best player in the game on your team.

The tough part with the Avs is basically trying to win with crap goalies because that's not an area they will be able to allocate much cap to moving forward.

They made a pretty big gamble with Georgiev. That contract won't be easy to move next summer if the goaltending doesn't work out. If he can't give them 45+ starts of average goaltending, then I don't see any non-tanking teams eager to take on 2 more years at $3.4M. It would be a straight cap dump and the Avs are already low on picks. They don't have their 2nd or 3rd rounder for the next two drafts and I think the price to shed two years of $3.4M would cost more than a 2025 2nd rounder. They might have to give up a genuinely good asset to move him if they need to.

With that said, if the gamble pays off then they are probably Cup favorites for the next 3 years.
