Not to make anything too political but I've been wondering when it comes to the draft and free agency if we would see less Russian players drafted and signed unless they were in North America or elsewhere in Europe already. But the situation with Flyers goalie prospect Ivan Fedotov who was arrested after trying to come over to play today will have a tendency to hurt things even more

I think this absolutely will be the case. And it’s not discrimination or anything, it’s just a realistic fact that the world is different right now with the lunacy going on over there.

Hopefully Fedotov makes it through that situation okay. Shit is wild.

This can absolutely hurt the stock of prospects playing in Russia and Belarus. Also wonder if some players will fly over to the US with their families for the draft and decide not to return to Russia, just in case. (Miroshnichenko has already tweeted he was going to be at the draft in person and also was just drafted in the CHL-import draft?)

Also wonder if Tarasenko, Buchnevich, Barbashev, Toropchenko, Kostin, Alexandrov and Zherenko are in the States at the moment. Or at least a 'safe country'.

EDIT: according to Army, Kostin is the only one that went back to Russia.

Interesting Letang deal. They way overpaid on term to make sure that cap hit is lower. Gotta make the most out of the final years of Crosby, so makes sense. Once Crosby starts slowing down, they aren't going to contend anyway.

I am a proponent of doing the same with Perron, with the difference being Perron won't be a 35+ contract.

I like a lot of moves that Sakic makes, but he has a thing for picking up meh goalies. Traded for Georgiev, which depending on his contract could be lol worthy.

Two 3rds and a 5th for Georgiev? Sakic hates draft picks; but if he's able to trade them for NHL'ers, more power to him. Picks are usually garbage.

Obviously it doesn't matter so long as Mack/Makar/Rantanen/Landeskog/Toews are all cooking along with Byram establishing himself, but the Avs have really emptied the futures tank over the past little bit. They have 10 picks over the next 3 drafts (including only a 6th/7th this year). 2 of those are their firsts next year and in '24 but the cupboard is going to get barren quick. That's the price you pay when you want to squeeze as much out of an elite core as you can - and if they win another Cup or 2 no one will care - but it can catch up to you quick.

I don't think Georgiev is all that good but I'd probably prefer doing this to signing Kuemper to whatever he is asking for. The team in front of him will be good enough that all he needs to do is be passable and they will be fine.

Colorado had better make the most of this window. Only four total picks in the first five rounds of the next three drafts and the smart money is that they spend those two firsts at the next couple of trade deadlines. Obviously they could sell players for picks later on, but this sure is bleak from a futures standpoint.

Yeah count me as one who doesn’t get that Georgiev trade. Kuemper, for his faults, is clearly superior.
Pair him as a tandem goalie with Francouz with the hope he becomes starting material.

Somewhat surprised they let Darcy go, but if he was asking for more than $6 mil AAV or 4 years I could see why.

Only so much $ to go around, and I'm sure Kuemper is trying to cash in on a Cup + solid season behind a stacked team. Have to imagine the Avs main focus at this point is to keep as many of Nuke/Lehkonen/Burakovsky/Kadri around as possible with a new MacK deal on the horizon.

MacK raise will be resolved with EJ’s contract being up after next season.

I think they’ll keep Nuke and Lehkonen while letting Burakovsky and Kadri walk.

I get why Sakic thinks the Avs can save money on goalie and spend it elsewhere. I don't get why he thinks Georgiev is guy to step in there. I've never seen any indication that he is even good backup.

Even more weird, he was set to not be qualified. They could have likely gotten him for nothing more than the cost of signing him.

Does their amateur scouting dept just go on a sabbatical for a couple years?
