Army you blow it. You had all pieces and didn't bring MT home. Fire Army. Go Siperia. Awful off-season by Army.

But price what Panthers paid is deeeeep.
What trade package would you have liked Army to offer in order to beat what Florida gave up? ROR and a 1st would fall way short and we don't really have a comparable D man to Weegar. Weegar should fetch a 1st and a good prospect at the deadline if they can't extend him.

ROR, two 1sts and one of our top 3 prospects? I'll pass on that.

ROR, Faulk/Parayko, and a 1st? I'll pass on that too.

Florida gave up way too much and I'm very happy Army didn't try to outbid them.

Tarasenko + Krug + prospect + 1st

I don't know what is our comparable prospect for Cole Swindth?

We had to lose David Perron and there are worse players on the team on long term deals he gave out that he obviously can't move, so that is a clear failure.

However not getting Tkachuk was the right move anyway. On top of that, if Armstrong had matched the price Florida paid I would have called for him to be fired, period.

I'm shocked. The whole Tkachuk move is weird to me. I am surprised he agreed to $9.5M. I know Florida has no state taxes, but I still think he could have gotten more next off-season. That's only $500k more than the minimum he would have gotten in arbitration. I guess income certainty was important to him.

I am also shocked with how much Florida gave up. They got the younger player locked up long term, so in that sense it worked, but Huberdeau is the better player. Losing him and Weegar really hurts. Those two guys are multiple firsts and prospects at the deadline. I wonder who was bidding against the Panthers to push it up so much, as I doubt we were anywhere near that.

I'm also a little shocked from Calgary's point of view. They are in a weird spot right now, and setting themselves up for another off-season like this one. They got two great players, but both are expiring deals. They will have to choose whether to go for 1 good playoff run or get some assets for those guys if they cannot re-sign them. For their sake, hopefully those guys like it there and will re-sign.

I'm dissapointed we couldn't get Tkachuk at $9.5M. That was in the salary range I wanted him, thinking it was a bit of a hometown discount. But I am very glad we didn't pay that trade price. Anyone faulting Armstrong is just looking for an excuse to bag on Armstrong <cough>Ranksu<cough>. There is no way you can fault Armstrong for not having a spare first pair D and top 6 (in the NHL) wing to give away.

Florida doesn't even have a spare first pair D. They now have a top four of Ekblad, Montour, Gudas, and Forsling (three of which are all RHD) and they are 3.375 mil over the cap with 22 players.

I think I'm the most disappointed with Matthew Tkachuk. If playing here was truly what he wanted, it was within reach. That ship has now sailed. For a very long time.

Please don't show up at the NHL All Star game revealing a Cardinals jersey ever again.

Meh

The hometown discount is a rarity now.

After we let Perron go (I guy who loved it here, wanted to retire here, and produced for us) I reset my expectations on what this really is: a business. A cold and ruthless business. The Blues and DA are no different. DA would trade his own mother if he thought the team would come out slightly better. The players know loyalty is rarely paid back by the hockey clubs/corporations, so what they need to do is maximize their income before they get permanently injured or lose their edge.

MT is mid 20s. If I were him I would go for a big payday contract like he did. The location is great too: beaches, warm weather, and no taxes. If he wants to come home or go to a contender he can still do so when he reaches his 30s. I think Big Walt has instructed his sons very well on the realities of NHL hockey.

makes ya wonder what happened with Perron

did Army just not want that old of a player on the roster (even for just 2 more years)?
did Perron's agent try to float a 4yr deal and soured Army to the point where he wouldn't even consider re-signing him?
Army just wanting to give younger players a spot to move up?

will also be interesting to see if ROR can create the chemistry with someone else that he had with Perron. if not, does that play into re-signing him?

The next step in this for the Flames is signing Huberdeau and Weeger to extensions, as they are both UFA's after the season ends. Or flipping them for more assets this offseason or at the deadline

This “no taxes” line always makes me laugh. Do you really think any state, especially one as large and populous as Florida, can provide services without taxes? Sure they have no income tax, but they’ve got a million other ways to move money from your wallet to theirs.

Never meant no taxes whatsoever.

Assumed you would understand state income tax and not local sales tax.

Oh well, grind away at your axe.
