Back when the fans threw a fit and ran Lindy/Reiger out of town I said they'd rue the day. Certainly wish I'd been more wrong.
His message was stale and he really lost the room. He needed as much a change of scenery as Buffalo needed one after 17 years. Of course, it looks worse because of the absolute garbage coaching we’ve had since, but it was the right move. I will say, It just stunk he wasn’t available to be hired in the beginning of the Eichel days.

Not sure whether Ruff is the answer, but hiring him would probably bring some credibility back to the organization with the fans that have lost faith.

I think the real answer to the coaching situation lies in the next group of coaches coming up, not these guys that are close to retirement (or should be).

Been there ...done that. I'm tired of the rookie coaches.

I want a dinosaur.

You must be a joy to be around.

I wasn’t that long ago that you were complaining about UPL.

Now he’s a Vezina caliber goalie, and it’s his fault Granato isn’t fired.

The Pegulas could sell, Adams fired, Granato fired, Sabres go get all the free agents, and I don’t think your posts would be much different.

Some humility would go a ways. Maybe recognize that Adams was smarter than all of us waiting for UPL to develop?

Remember, you’re the “don’t draft a D, draft Eichel’s winger” guy from the 2016 draft.
And he'll NEVER acknowledge or respond to all the whoppers he gets called out on.

I don't read Adams actions with the goaltending position as Adams being smarter than everybody else, knowing UPL would be having the sort of run as he's had. It's more like he got lucky that UPL has gotten hot than anything else.

Nothing about UPL's play previously to post Jan 1st would point to his level of play and something to estimate with his development. He was the picture of inconsistency, and the gaps in the good play vs bad play were at different ends of the spectrum.

I don't think we need Ruff, but let's be honest -- we need a guy who will yell at them when they f*** up in practice, or don't take something seriously.

These hard nose coaches don't have a long shelf life, but as Ryan Miller recently said about Hitchcock, the lessons learned in the locker room last for years after they lave.

That's not true.

The kid was the OHL player of the year as a goalie. He's got the skills and the success at lower levels of hockey which pointed to NHL success.

He was trained in Finland as a strict butterfly, RVH style goalie. The NHL style changed and he had to re-learn how to play in order to have success. I pointed all these things out in the goalie thread over a year ago.

UPL was also a 2nd round pick and the 2nd goalie off the board behind Oettinger. So, he definitely had a lot of potential at the time of the draft.

Goalies take time to develop and I think the biggest thing for UPL was that he has been healthy this year and been able to get a big chunk of games in.

Getting way into the weeds here, but he also had an under rotation and over rotation issue, along with over sliding. He had a lot to work on between his OHL days and where he is now. It takes time, as you stated.

A lot of it is the reps of reading the plays that he sees in the NHL.

Generally, NHL teams play much more structured defense than even AHL teams do. So, it takes NHL reps to be able to read the patterns of the game and stay "in control" which was an area where UPL had to develop in at the NHL level.

There are layers to goalie development. And it takes game reps to get there and rarely is it fast or linear. And as we have seen, there is a ton of season to season variability with NHL goalies. So, UPL could take a step back next year. Or, he could take another step forward.

The same goes for Levi.

As long as they're proven
The problem is the crusty guys that have probably fallen off their prime and have been around too long. Most of Ruff's cohort are justifiably out of the game, or are riding some credibility that they have not substantiated in years. The same names come up with 'proven' and IMO are has-beens.

The trick is to find the next wave of coaches that know how to do it in the NHL, but for whatever reason, has not worked out and were pushed out. Maybe they have grown from that experience and will be great in their next role.

This is not easy.

Why did the rags hire Lavy and not the highly regarded coach of their AHL affiliate who went to Edmonton and turned them around?
Why is a Flyers team that coming into the season was seen as a no hope bottom 5 for sure team likely headed to the playoffs despite losing their starting goalie to prison?

Knoblauch got the job with the Oilers mostly due to his connections with being McDavid's OHL coach.

Who we're talking talking about is nebulous. Considering I have already noted I am not talking about promoting someone from another league, I'll restate that since you are referencing that type of promotion. No more Housely's/Granatos/Krugers. I am with you there.

Here are the guys that get mentioned that I feel aren't the solution and have been given too many chances, or style is a mis-match to today's player:

Available:
Maybe Ruff
Gallant
Laviolette
Babcock
Quinville
Boudreau

Probably out:
Martin
McLellan

This is probably the wrong thread for this.

Two of them is not like others.
