As much as the rumor being true would be funny, I’m pretty sure that wouldn’t violate the standard player’s contract.

Maybe, but he could also have violated another team policy in the process, which made the decision easy.

I'm thinking if this rumor wasn't true, Chicago would have put out a message with a bull horn to kill it...yet here we are...

Funny all the memes it generates but you’ve gotta think if it were true, Perry would be gone. Bedard is their future.

I don't see any way that the NHLPA would ever allow a team to dictate a player's personal relationships and consensual sex life. I suppose it's possible that a team might overreach to try to placate their young star, but I'm not sure I buy it. Besides, as far as I can tell these "rumors" are completely unsubstantiated and are based solely on the timing of Perry's absence from the team.

I would assume that there is something else going on here. As for what that something else is and how serious it is, that of course remains to be seen.

I don’t think most people actually buy it. It’s just a lot of fun to proliferate. At a certain point though, it will be taken as fact if they don’t tamp down on it quickly enough.

I already have friends asking me about it who don’t even follow hockey in the slightest. That’s not good.

The fact is Chicago has a horrible track record of being open and honest about internal issues, and their statement doesn't go far enough to squash the rumors. I get there are confidentially agreements and the like but at least say something to the effect of "The incident does not involve any family members of any of the Blackhawks players but we will not be revealing any further information". Not being open and honest is how rumors start, sadly.

Exactly. You don’t need to do much to quash the rumors. People are making it seem akin to admitting guilt to a boatload of crimes just to give folks the tiniest hint of clarification.

What are the rules governing the player assistance program? Can a team mandate a player go into the program, and if a player refuses, then what?

Not speculating about Perry (since we don't even know if whatever he did fits in the program anyways), but just a general question.

Bedard will probably hear things about his mom for years on the ice just because of a dumb meme. Poor guy.

In the SHL a players' girlfriend actually cheated during the break for the national team with a player he ended up facing in the shl finals. The other team quoted his girlfriend and gave him intimate details during the games. He didn't perform very well during the series. Hockey players are assholes.
