Around the NHL: HOCKEY’S BACK BABY

Holy shit. That's.......wow.

Some of y'all that bag on Pegula -- he ain't Melynk and be thankful for that.

Aw man poor guy. Also feel really bad for all the gray bureaucrats that make up Ottawa's fanbase.

It feels so good to hate these teams again. Just watched Sens Game 7 1999, now digging into Flyers Game 3 1997.

At the time of the trade it was a bit baffling that Monahan's value was so bad Calgary had to give up a 1st rounder too.

I like those moves when a team has cap space and can pick up a cap dump and get draft picks too. sometimes a change of scenery can turn the player around or they are still servicable. Cap dump doesn't usually turn out to be as good as Monahan but they are out there to be found especially when Buffalo has space to make those moves.

I like the Newhook trade but it was a bit steep. Both Montreal and Detroit did good jobs in the off season putting together competitive teams.

When we were looking at the playoffs we never had Montreal and Detroit in the mix. Its gonna be a dog fight.
It wasn't baffling.

Due to injuries, he went from being Calgary's #1 all situations center to their 12th/13th forward. It made perfect sense that Calgary would want to unload his 6.375mil cap hit for the upcoming 22-23 season.

He was pretty beat up and a shell of his former self as @Chainshot mentioned. He's had multiple surgeries, including both hips (the labrum) in the year or so before the trade. He was actually in the middle of his recovery from the right-side surgery and was questionable for the start of the 22-23 season the time of the trade. He wasn't cleared to play until 10/3/22. Then got injured again two months later and missed the rest of the Habs season. He only played 25gms last year.

I agree with you that there are cap dump moves out there. But they have to fit what the team needs or is doing.

Seeing the Avs score a goal early after being shut out two games in a row seems to have given them some spring.

2. As for a successor to Pierre Dorion, I don’t sense the Senators are in a rush. “This was never anticipated,” Andlauer said. He came from Montreal, where Jeff Gorton and Kent Hughes run the show, and liked the idea of two people overseeing hockey operations. If this cloud hadn’t blocked the sun, Dorion would still be general manager.

Staios had a strong line about his current plan: “First priority is to install stability and confidence in the group.” The ownership change, Pinto and now this, it's seismic stuff. Calming the waters is critical.

There’s been a lot of talk about Peter Chiarelli, but another name I’d throw in there is Tampa Bay director of hockey operations Mathieu Darche. Darche interviewed in Montreal while Andlauer still owned part of the Canadiens, so there is familiarity. Another person suggested Jason Spezza. Teams with legit candidates aren’t always willing to give them up in-season. It will be up to Staios, but another possibility is the organization adding a “veteran hockey presence” in a non-GM role. There is going to be a ton of interest, despite the loss of this draft choice. Team is on the way up, Dorion left them far from barren.

Asplund called up by the Panthers. He has 5 points in 7 AHL games.

Pysyk signed a PTO with AHL Penguins. He hasn't played a game since April 29, 2022 with the Sabres.

The Canucks have now scored more goals in this game, than the Sharks have done over the whole season.

Sens are really going through it right now. Feels weird to almost have sympathy for them

At least their fans have a good young team to rally around.
