Can anyone explain to me why his suspension is apparently "retro-active" and currently running, regardless of him not having a contract and not even being eligible to play? The suspension should start on the first date he is eligible to actually play.
Gary bet on himself if he can actually do that

How did Montreal get Monahan and a 1st rounder from Calgary for futures?

Monahan was viewed as a cap dump. Similar to how the Hurricanes got a first from Toronto to take on Marleau's deal, the Habs took on Monahan's contract for a first.

Those are the types of moves I wish Adams could pull off. Montreal lucked out there. He just needed a change of scenery.

Yes! Montreal has put together a decent Center spine with a few trades. Adding Monahan and Newhook was pretty good work, although they gave up a decent amount for Newhook. Even still, gaining those two players by giving up a late first and a second, while gaining a first is certainly something I'd have considered.

I will say, Monahan would sure look good on our line 3 right now. Having him along with Tage, Cozens, Mitts would be great depth with one shifting to wing.

I mean, what about greenway? Not exactly the same production, but has still had a very positive impact on the roster this year.
Montreal got a conditional first with Monahan for futures. Greenway trade is nothing like that.

We gave up a 2nd and a 5th for Greenway.

At the time of the trade it was a bit baffling that Monahan's value was so bad Calgary had to give up a 1st rounder too.

I like those moves when a team has cap space and can pick up a cap dump and get draft picks too. sometimes a change of scenery can turn the player around or they are still servicable. Cap dump doesn't usually turn out to be as good as Monahan but they are out there to be found especially when Buffalo has space to make those moves.

I like the Newhook trade but it was a bit steep. Both Montreal and Detroit did good jobs in the off season putting together competitive teams.

When we were looking at the playoffs we never had Montreal and Detroit in the mix. Its gonna be a dog fight.

Fair, but monahan's salary is also twice Greenway's, so that makes sense to me that they would get a conditional back.
I am not knocking the Greenway trade I was more talking about taking a cap dump and getting draft picks with that trade and still getting a servicable player. Montreal did good.

Still likely to be a solid move for Adams as Greenway provides something immediately. He's also something the Sabres basically have none of. He's their best defensive forward by a fair margin on a team with very few.

The chances that we'd have drafted a player like Greenway that is ready to contribute any time soon were slim. 2nd round picks in the NHL are basically a lottery ticket. Just look at our recent draft history and consider what the odds are of Kisakov, Poltapov, etc. making this roster anytime remotely soon. Not only that, but making an impact defensively and being a top PK'er.

Adams needs to make several moves like this over the next 2-3 ears to make this team a contender. There's some holes on the roster than can be filled with shrewd trades. You see it on every cup winner, where the core was drafted and the key pieces around them are filled with smart trading.

Totally gotcha. Not trying to argue or disagree. I just think that would be our comparable trade to Montreal. Though Monahan is having himself a great start to the year and Montreal pulled off a massive win.
