As others have mentioned, even with those pieces I would rather have a 1C that Zibanejad has turned into. Brassard was severely underwhelming and IMO wasn’t a factor in the playoffs where I thought he’d shine. The dude got gift wrapped a goal by Karlsson and then had a flukey bounce to tie the game in game 5 vs the rangers. Seeing what zibanejad has turned into makes it even tougher pill to swallow on a pretty decent contract
I'm not denying that we lost the trade, it looks especially bad in hindsight. What I am refuting is that people tend to measure it in a light that is particularly unflattering for Dorion, as a 1 to 1, which is wrong. The complete ripple effect of that trade has not played out and Dorion might very well deserve a modicum of credit by the time all is said and done.
We have prospects as a result of it that are still developing and could emerge nicely. If Gus in particular turns into a solid starting goalie in the NHL and gives us several good years (or if heavens forbid he emerges as an elite talent) that will be big, especially considering our inability as a franchise to groom a homegrown starter.
If JBD emerges as a top 4 defensemen that is another valuable asset that adds some balance to the trade. Sogaard has potential as well.
I won't necessarily suggest that you should trade a #1C for a starting goalie and a top 4 d man but when looked at that way it isn't so lop sided. And what if, heaven's forbid, those two emerge as excellent players- a top 5 goalie and a top pairing D man for example? That scenario is not entirely unlikely at this point so why do people act like they aren't factors and take all possible credit away from Dorion?
People love to harp on PD's trade record like a sport but to add fodder to their own debate they seem to ignore the big picture.
