I’m not sure why anyone thought they’d be good? Relying on insane goaltending, adding no one good? Do they have some blue chip rookies that were expected to make an impact or something?

Only made playoffs because Pens shit the bed. With a competent trade deadline those sad sack Pens would have still finished higher than them.
Woodcroft came in and tried to fix a shit culture with a shit roster Holland gave him and 2 HHOFers that started to pout like babies because they had to play a better game defensively and got fired for it.
I don't know why any coach takes that job. It's a career killer. There's no surviving that shitty culture and management above.
In the Draisaitl/McDavid era...
Todd McLellan - went on to coach another team
Ken Hitchcock - straight up retired after a short stint
Dave Tippett - never coached in the NHL again
Jay Woodcroft - bloke had 2 good seasons and was given shit to fill the rest of his roster and then this year he figures ok enough is enough and they need to fix stuff, 5v5 they were fine but special teams and goaltending? Ouch. Also their goalies f***ing suck.
So they hire Mcdavid's old coach and pump his resume up from juniors and claim it was development Hahaha...
f*** the oilers. They deserve all of this shit. A franchise that tanked this hard for a very long time, deserves to waste the fruits of their pathetic tanking labor, being flushed down the construction site outhouse.

They only have three fewer goals allowed than a Sharks team that gave up 10 in back to back games.MAF and Gus have been awful so far.
Say what you will about Dumba, but he was solid defender for them.

Seattle is a perfect example of why having elite talent can elevate a team. Seattle's got depth, but the kind of 40-50 point depth where the entire team has to buy in every night for them to do well. They don't have those elite guys who can carry a team to a win now and then when the team isn't at its best.
