Man, this news is really messing with me. Give your loved ones some hugs today or next time you see them.
Same here. I’m a person who is usually hardly affected by deaths to people I do not know personally. Not to sound callus, but it just usually doesn’t get to me. I haven’t even seen the video and I still had a nightmare last night just having the thought in my mind. Just so terrible.

The ensuing online attacking of the player who happened to have clipped him is just another reminder what a plague social media has become to the human race.

I thought mcdoucher was supposed to be hurt. What gives?

He wasnt going to miss this game unless forced to. Wouldnt surprise me to see him keep playing and be out again after reaggravating whatever muscle injury he has.

Tragic. Hopefully this motivates leagues around the world to take serious looks into preventative measures.
Only way to prevent that is to literally implement a neck guard. Because the cut in the area is something you need to get quick medical attention to and right to the ER. You can't dull the blades and prevent players from falling.

We all know all too well how implementation of a safe guard to help people brings all types of muppets out of the woodwork.

For me, seeing a few players lose vision in an eye from a stick or puck with or without a visor will be their crutch to say see it doesn't help! But seriously, at the speeds they go and how they fall, the chances are there but super low so it's a tough sell.

The best anyone can do is figure out a way to clot that cut just long enough to make it to a hospital and live. Like a quick tape that seals and helps with keeping pressure on the area without any other damage for a short period of time. It just needs to last 30mins at least.

It’s on par with the Malarchuk accident, but worse because the end result. I’m guessing that because a death happened that nhl and other leagues will push for neck guards like the mesh due to the fan killed in stands from being struck with a puck over glass.
It reminded me of that and Richard Zednik's injury immediately and how they survived and how unfair it was that Adam didn't.

Richard's was gruesome too, I remember the blood on the ice in that Panthers game on TV and was like what the actual f***?!

There is really no reason why there isnt a soft slash proof neck guard available. If a league like the NHL asked for it, companies would have prototypes in weeks.

I wore one in youth as I believe most did back then. It was itchy and gross but at that age you understood why.

I think players always had the option to but likely never will. Instead they'll focus on why a player made the hit the way he did and why his leg went that way over safeguards.

Even Sid wore a version of it in Rimouski.

I get the current options arent the most comfortable. But thats what I am saying. If the NHL/NHLPA came out and said its going to be mandatory starting next season, companies could have new designs out for testing in weeks. Problem is that there has been little to no appetite for it. Im actually shocked there hasnt been more incidents like this to be honest. 16 men out on the ice at once and skate cuts are pretty rare.

I remember when that bloke in college was paralysed racing for icing and then it happened a couple more times, an nhler even broke his heels during one race for icing and the NHL finally did away with it.

But that's controlling a part of the game that can be controlled to help keep players safe.

This is a league where the department player of safety doesn't treat head injuries as seriously as they should when someone throws a head shot, I don't see the NHL wanting to do anything out of the sheer ignorance they love to display because "it didn't happen in the NHL"..

Just like those that were paralysed on men's and women's hockey teams in college. It took nhlers being hurt to finally do something. Their M.O is to wait for it to happen in the NHL and pretend to be worried, then do nothing as usual.

Part of the problem is you have to have the NHLPA sign off on things like that, which is why skate guards arent mandatory. Flames tried to do that 4-5 years ago and got hammered by the PA over it. You cant force the players to make the right choice.

Mate, the PA can't even get these tossers to respect each other.

Looked like he wanted to hit him but AJ changes directions on a dime so he did also almost at the exact same time and tried to throw his entire body at him but times it poorly and instead of his body blow hit his skates got him. At that blood loss I am betting he died at the arena, not the hospital as it took them, what…10 minutes for ambulance to get there or something?

The should require some form of neck guard, but it'll take forever because process. Even then, it'll probably be some stupid shit like helmets and grandfathered in.

After all, this is the league that still doesn't really give a shit about headshots and they happen way more often than this type of tragedy.

I saw the article on ESPN originally and they said "death from an on ice collision". It was vague so I went searching for the clip of what happened. I very much regret looking

Malarchuk made it because the equipment trainer was a Vietnam combat medic who knew how to pinch off the vein until doctors arrived. Zednick was also able to skate to the bench and get immediate attention. It seems like Johnson's cut might have been worse regardless, but the lack of immediate attention he received (or didn't receive I guess) eliminated any small chance he might've had for survival...

Johnson was 100% murdered by a reckless and idiotic player. That was horseshit. Should go to prison for manslaughter.

Assumed it was a bad accident because I did not want to watch the play. But it came on my twitter feed… and boy, that looks like he tried to clip him. Obviously the result is unintentional but I do think he was trying to hit Johnson with his leg.

What a shit situation. Dont think NHLers need it but no reason for neck guards not to be mandated in youth, junior, college.

What you're saying is libelous. If that kid decided to sue you, you’d likely lose. I’m surprised the mods let this post stay up.
