Even when it looked like he was worth it he wasn't. Winning that cup as a rookie isn't as impressive as it appears.
He was a hot rookie goaltender that opponents hadn't figured out yet. Similar to Biddington in St. Louis. $6.25 is a huge overpayment.
It's no different than giving Tocchet a head coaching job because he won a cup in Pittsburgh; yet Crosby, Kessel, Malkin and Guentzel actually won that cup.
Murray is an average NHL goalie way overcompensated for being in the right place at the right time.
