Obviously, we're anticipating moving some D here; but Koekkoek is a solid guy whose flexibility is terrific. If we can get him, I want to go after him.

Can you imagine the arbitration award? I bet they try to bring him back, but arbiters love #'s like his. It's a guaranteed overpriced rental at that point.

But I think it would have given him a chance to get to Arbitration and a number higher than his worth.

Maybe he thought he'd get a better read in person, but that's a terrible decision. You get the agent so you don't have to hear the owner tell the agent all the reasons you're not worth the money, and the agent concentrates on numbers and grinding while keeping you insulated from the sausage making.
It's the same reasons players and teams are typically working hard towards a deal and reluctant to go to arbitration. You're going to hear the team completely shred you as a player to make their case you deserve less money. It's far better for everyone that all that happens by proxy while you're blissfully ignorant.
