Emily Kaplan: Drury has support from Dolan, and is looking for a trade to shake things up
Kakko for Palat straight up, get some veteran leadership into their locker room and get that malcontent out.

Devils add Cole Brown so the media can give the trade a good score for the Rangers, since they got youth and a veteran back.

Their solution to being in a hole, is to keep digging.

The only way Kakko would wind up here right now is if he forced his way here. Even that really isn't possible because he doesn't even have a no trade clause (right?).

Man it's a nice fantasy though. You just know he would thrive here and it would be an evergreen taunt to use against Rangers fans.

I don't think there's any middle ground for the Rangers the rest of this season. Either they are going to somehow bounce back and get into the playoffs as a wildcard, or they are going to completely sink to the bottom.

Yeah there isn't a realistic path right now. He is a RFA after this season so whomever he gets traded to he would have to force his way out of there, which seems doubtful.

Probably finally trade Kakko, maybe for z
Hoglander or something since they were rumored to be trying for him for a bit.

Really not sure how trading him or Kreider changes much of anything
Can they even trade Kreider if the locker room is rebelling against veterans being treated poorly in their eyes?

Almost feels like a damned if you do, damned if you don’t situation.

I wonder if some of Kakko’s, “I guess I was benched for being young.” was born out of locker room friction between the wealthy veterans and everyone else.

Isn't Kakko one of the slowest players in the league? I'm not sure how well he'd fit here.

I remember seeing stats on NHL skaters and Kakko was almost exactly the same speed as Noesen. He was actually the comparison I was going to bring up.
I don't watch enough of Kakko, but I feel part of his issue, in addition to lack of speed, is his lack of passion. Noesen plays with passion, and because of that I think he plays faster then his top speed. He seems very active for such a slow player.

I also think Noesen's success with the Devils is really based on 2 things. His PP scoring and his willingness to stand up for team mates. I don't think Kakko brings much of either.

It's too soon to count the Rangers out. They're better than the Penguins
They are not in the last two months. Pens have a positive expected 5 v5 goals rate while Rangers are in the negative. I don’t think folks are watching the Rangers play. They have been bad bad and it’s been quite obvious. They are currently on two different paths

Also people are very much underestimating the toxicity around the team and how that impacts performance. For them to turn things around they need to build some kind of positive vibe, and that’s not something you can just flip on at will in these circumstances. Look at the 2010-11 devils…they were an utter embarrassment of a team under John Maclean and with Langs’ captaincy turning sour. It wasn’t until Lemaire was brought in and Langs shipped out that they got a spark to go on a run.

The Rangers are in a much worse position than that because the source of their issues is the GM and a clear conflict between vets who continue to get rewarded with ice time despite not delivering and youngsters like Kakko who are getting buried in the lineup or even scratched despite not being the team’s biggest issue. They also don’t have a strong roster outside of Shesterkin and Panarin. They were always a paper tiger as for as competing for a cup goes, but now their roster really is crap, look at that friggin blue line.

This is an ugly ugly situation they have going on…and I’m loving it lol

Drury really overplayed his hand with The Memo. Losing Goodrow and almost losing Trouba in the offseason didn't thrill the locker room, but it seemed like they were ready to turn the page on everything until that. Since then, the Rangers are 3-9-1.

I don’t think the Goodrow stuff has much to do with anything if it had just been that. I do think the Trouba stuff in the offseason and the leaking the stuff about his wife probably didn’t sit well.

That Drury does a lot of his business through the media is a big part of the problem.
