I do get the Canes thought process here. You can extend Deangelo for much cheaper than Pesce, Deangelo isn't going to cost much in a trade, and you can get a good return for Pesce. Then you use Deangelo as a stopgap to Nikishin. In theory it makes sense but like Deangelo sucks.

the AAV is low but 4 years for 35 year old Jordan Staal seems....long?

Getting the cheap AAV is what matters here. The term is probably irrelevant. I think they get at least 2 maybe 3 good enough years. Then you ship him off. Haula's younger so maybe he maintains a usefulness while Staal crashes as soon as next year or year 2 but I think Staal remains better for at least 1 year if not 2 or 3 and is slightly cheaper.

Staal is fine as long as he can clutch grab and interfere. Take that away from him and he isn’t that good any more to my eyes.

Krug doesn’t want to go to a tanking team where he could get potentially benched by Trots as a way to force him to accept a trade out? Go figure.

I'm glad Krug is screwing over the Flyers in a way. They are trying to get thoer 3rd 1st round pick and he I basically preventing that.

They still might get it from somewhere. They've pivoted to looking elsewhere for Sanheim. A 1+2 was offered for Laughton and declined (insane to decline that). There's Konecny.

My brain refuses to accept that Laughton rumor is true.

I'm not sure why Vegas did this, but I think the contract itself is fine. I get that people are going to say it's an overpay, but I thought husso was a decent contract comparable for Hill, tbh.
Meh, it's the Binnington "thank you for a cup" contract.
