The only thing I can think of is that he was giving someone else information to bet on his games, but I would think the league would have gone for a permanent ban.

But It has been said that the NHL was notified by the betting site based on activity on his account. So the infraction occurred on his account. It would be really dumb to give someone else inside information to place bets on an account with his name. That would be construed as him betting on the NHL too, even if his friend logged on, since it was from his account.

My guess is he had others place non-hockey bets on his account. Why would that be illegal or against any rules though? Only reason that’d make sense is WHY he wouldn’t place those usually legal bets himself - he was currently on a road trip and the city he was currently in didn’t allow sports gambling.

That’s just a guess but given the various facts that have leaked out, that’s the only scenario that I can come up with that’d make sense to be against any rules. The betting sites track your location so he had someone else place bets for him on his account to get around the geo-tracking.

But 41 games seems harsh for that. If that was true, maybe there was some sort of deal where the betting site agreed not to go to the police for breaking gambling laws, and he agreed to a longer suspension. Then the NHL agreed not to have this go public, and the betting sponsor got a better deal on their endorsement contract. And justice was served....

Yeah, no shit he’s made more money than all of us, still doesn’t mean he wasn’t a POS on the ice.
All the national and Canadian media always fawning on him made me sick. I don’t care how affable he was. Nice guy nearly ended Perron‘s career with an elbow to his head. It’s so gratifying that Perron won a Cup and Thornton never did.

Yea, what a loser. Made more money in a year than many of us will make in a lifetime and played a sport as one of the best in the league in the best league in the world for over a decade. What a lo....oh.....
His earnings and stats don't nullify that he was easy to dislike as a player. I get it. Your defense here seems strained, and inexplicable.

He was a great player. He's a first ballot hall of famer. He's 12th all time in points. Calling him a loser is ridiculous and whiny. There is a reason I end up not liking the team when I have to interact with the fans. Fandom is stupid. Calling a first ballot hall of famer a loser because he hurt one of your players once???? Don't like him all you want, but calling him a loser is ridiculous.

If I recall correctly, you have a very strong opinion about Steve Ott as a player (or maybe I'm conflating with another poster). Objectively, Ott has a lot of laudable accomplishments in hockey. I can tell you, he is well beloved in Dallas when I attended a game there shortly after he joined the Blues.

Opinions about liking or disliking a player can be independent of their HOF ballot status. I don't like Joe Thornton either, and I never said it had anything to do with the illegal Perron hit. Calling him a 'loser' is an accurate term if you want to talk about postseason team accomplishments he is associated with. I didn't use the term, but I understand where that poster is coming from. If you're a huge fan of Thornton and simply have a different opinion on him, so be it. But I get more the sense that you're neutral about him and simply here to correct others.

Just saw this and not sure where else to put it.
Big changes coming to the NHL Draft:

Ongoing story; we won't know the full extent of the changes until after the GM meetings in November.

Apologies if someone else aleady posted it.

As the OP of the loser comment, I was mostly referring to his team success (or lack there of) and his multiple questionable at best antics.

I’m sure he’s fine as a person, as I’ve always heard he was loved by pretty much all of his teammates. I’ve just always had a hatred for him as a player.

This seems like a no-brainer with no detractors. But I'll miss the footage of the guys on the phone at the tables, and imagining what deals they're scheming.

If he's not a loser than what did he ever win besides gold with team Canada? Which btw any of us here could have walked away with gold on team Canada.

Is it my imagination or is Buffalo actually good this year?

they're currently at the bottom of the atlantic division and haven't been good this year often, but they are picking apart the slumping avs today

I've watched multiple Sabres games and multiple Avs games. It's crazy how poor the Sabres looked last week and how good they looked today. Vice versa for the Avs. It's been really difficult to get a read on how good teams actually are this season. So many Jekkyl and Hyde performances.

Except the Sharks. Man are the Sharks terrible.

What would a decentralized draft look like? Do the NFL or NBA do this with no GMs at tables in one arena? Would the draft itself still be held in an arena and each team would have reps just to take pics with the draftees, or would that not happen at all? Lots of questions about what a new format would look like.

Its me. I dislike Ott. I've never called him a loser though. So I am not sure what his laudable accomplishments have to do with it.

Its not about liking or disliking him. Its about the word loser. It just strikes me as odd that we here who would kill to play in an NHL game call one of the best ever at it a loser. That just screams of sour grapes to me. Dislike him all you want, failing to win everything (but coming damn close) at the highest level of a team game does not make one a loser. There are a ton of Blues players that were not near as good as Thornton who never won that you and the OP would bristle at seeing called a loser.

I liked Thornton. I like almost everyone who can play the game at a super high level. They are fun to watch. But its more about the comment being a mischaracterization than my fandom of Thornton.

Not sure if all the major sports leagues do it, but the most well known is NBA. No GM's in sight as it's the players day, but they are in a separate room (to my knowledge) making deals and making picks. Lots of people enjoy having the teams on the draft floor, but the product on tv is god awful and takes forever. At least with decentralization you can maybe get more people interested in the draft and make a better tv product.

Dumbo Joe finally retired. So glad that loser never won a cup.

One of the dirtiest players in the league during his tenure. He was a dick. He actually reminded me of Gilmour. They were both sneaky dirty. Both always did dirty things away from the play. Both were really skilled but easily hated.

Somehow Dumbo became a media darling which made him even easier to hate.
