Yeah, but unfortunately, that context was seen by said individuals in light of their own self-obsessed "my toughness is what makes me great" mindset. Talent always wins out in the end. I saw the move for the mistake it was at the time, and so did many others.

Oh I did too. But the context is key to understanding why the move was made, whether we think it was a mistake or not.

It also turned out that the Flyers did NOT define the next decade.

Better yet, why are we arguing about offense vs defense when the Rangers themselves say leadership is the problem?

I would love some elite offensive forwards. I think it would help us a lot.

But it was Andersson last year, it'll be Farabee/Tkachuk this year, they'll be 55 point players, and we'll have Neal Pionk making 6.5 million a year to be a 44% possession player.

But we'll be fiery and competitive!
1) You're deflecting from my counterpoint re: your railing about defense.

2) Again, you're assuming Andersson is a bust third-line, hardworking type already. Sure, I'd love to have taken Pettersson instead (he's whom I'd targeted going in), but he wasn't available. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the flashy deke you out of your seat, pass on a string types and want more of them, but he's done nothing but perform his entire career, including since we selected him. Let's give him a chance, ESPECIALLY since the Ranger then "reached" for potential second round pick Filip Chytil who appears to be exactly the player you and I both want, with what was much ballsier a pick than what Mittelstadt or Suzuki would've been at 7.

3) I put much of the character/leadership stuff down to the lack of it on the last couple of years' teams, not that it's the be-all, end-all and will trump talent in what they look for. (And frankly, so long as they don't treat it as the be-all, end-all, they're not wrong.)

I mean if hes calling Andersson a 55 pt player is that really a bust?

Chill out. I would bet that we draft Bouchard, Dobson, Hughes or Boqvist before Farabee if we stay put at 9. This team acquired Lidngren, Hajek, TDA as defensive prospects in trades, signed Shattenkirk. It's not like Gorton is saying "**** defensemen".
If this team, just once, doesn't reach with a top 10 pick to fit some paradigm, I'll be very chill.

Guilty until proven innocent. I don't know how you can be a Rangers fan and not understand that.

Everything I've ever known about the Rangers tells me they reach for Farabee. Hope I'm wrong.
And what the Rangers showed me at the deadline is they also think the defense is a serious issue for this teams future. Every single prospect they got back at the TDL outside Howden was a dman. I have a feeling that trend will continue but we'll have to see

1)It's not about defense vs offense. It's about defense vs character/leadership.

2)I'm repeating what Rangers brass has told me about Andersson. Again, he may be a very good player, but if you think the Rangers drafted him for talent, you're not paying attention to anything Gorton and Dolan have said.

3)It seems to them to be the be-all, end-all to the people in charge. Gorton's whole theme this offseason has been character. Dolan basically said we traded McDonagh for being a bad captain. Dolan should be taken withe grain of salt, sure, but he said it. Show me where I'm wrong. Show me this team's plan that doesn't have to do with character. Don't show me who they've acquired, I wanna hear it from Gorton's mouth that talent trumps leadership. Show me the quote.

I’m pretty sure the Rangers have reached with a top 10 pick only once or twice in their history. McIlrath for sure. Andersson doesn’t qualify. Montoya, Blackburn, Lundmark, Brendl, Malhotra, Sundstrom, Dahlen, Leetch, and Patrick don’t qualify. I don’t think Jayson More qualifies either although I know less about him.

Now you're railing on Farabee today? Please do tell me what's wrong with him? Is it his strong skating ability that's shown both powerful acceleration and the strong edgework to move quickly laterally and attack open seams in defenses? Is it his strong playmaking skills and abilities to set up teammates or his ability to find open ice for himself in the slot and around the net? Is it the strong defensive plays and aggressiveness attacking through the neutral zone? Maybe it's his recent strong performance at the u18s where he was a key cog on his line?

Is it because there are a few popular rankings that have him at 16 behind guys like Lunderstom and McLeod? I guess Kotkaniemi is a reach too since Hayton, McLeod, and Lunderstrom are ranked higher than him in some of these rankings too.

Reach is an insignificant thing, what matters is what the prospect will show on the ice in the future. Imagine if we drafted Marchand 5 overall in his draft, people would kill Gorton for "reaching". The Chytil pick gave me hope in our drafting in this rebuild.

There will be better prospects where we pick. It's that simple.

Total strawman.

You are the one harping on about our D. It's a rebuild. In a rebuild you draft BPA and stockpile young talent.

Gorton was adamant on Hajek in McD trade. That tells me knows the defence is a big issue.

Just because they are raving about his character and leadership DOES NOT mean he isn't talented.

His D+1 season was on par with Kopitar.
