One of the most interesting threads I read recently was on Stepan's retirement in the Rangers forum. Post after post about what a gamer he was.

Not sure if that was true at one time and is now not, or we simply got the inferior pre-retirement country club version here in Arizona as is often the case.

I even say this as someone who thinks the trade for him is still defensible, but he's a very bewildering dude.

He was a gamer for the Rags. He was neck and neck with ROR at the time of the trade and seem in a similar light. He got here put on his flip flops, cracked his bud lights and went into permanent vacation mode.

I'd take him back if the paid us to.

Why pass on Garland? If Guenther needs time, Garland would be a great fill in for a year or two. Kid scores, has a lot of Moxie, and may thrive under this coaching staff compared to Vancouver.

Boyd+Soderstrom for Garland+Podkolzin?

Stepan was never neck and neck with ROR, and to be honest not many players are. Players like ROR don't come around very often. He was always good in the playoffs when it counted. Outstanding in the dot. One of my favorite players. Vastly underrated.

At the time of the trade ROR was not yet ROR and Stepan was not yet Stepan. They were seen at that time as very close comparibles. There’s a reason why Stepan commanded a top ten draft pick and highly promising and productive young nhl roster d man.
