Around The NHL #13

Seems like a lot to give up for the Kings to rid themselves of Peterson's contract...

Take a look at their cap --

To me it's a hell of a trade for LA (and the other two teams also, different discussion). That extra 3m in LA cap space (they retained on Provorov) means they can sign a halfway decent starting goalie (Korpi or someone else) as well as all of their UFAs if they want, most likely including Gavrikov which wouldn't have been possible otherwise.

All for what I would consider the equivalent of three 2nds (Walker, Grans, an actual second). So basically a 2nd rounder and 2 2nd rounder level prospects / young players to clear ~3m in annual cap space. But they really needed the space so their team is much better for it.

Borderline genius move imo -- these types of 3 team deals are not at all easy to pull off

LAK got a bargain. They got out of Walker and 70% of Peterson and it only cost them Grans and a 2nd.

This is the contract they expected BA to eat for free and then whined to the media about his “outrageous” ask.

EDIT: the retention is on Provorov. Even sweeter for LA.

I don’t think BA would’ve been willing to lower his ask to this level. He set the market for these dumps. Now knuckle head rookie GMs like Briere and Kyle Davidson are racing to bottom it out. I bet BA is pretty unhappy with these two upstarts.

I was all about to see your response and then go rant at Meruelo and Mr happy suit (I'm not quite as pissed at them as you are, but it's close), but... that was a really good counterpoint.

One nitpicky thing -- doesn't really matter who the retention is on, dollars retained are dollars retained as long as the term is the same (which it is in this case).

Regardless, always good to learn something / get smarter while on these boards, appreciate the insight. Well done and thx

I think Mike Babcock is (was) overrated but the hate he gets is ridiculous. Mitch Marner cries and Babcock is basically Satan? I would think the bigger story here is Marner has the toughness of a 10 year old. Just shocking that “coach yelled at player” turned into this.

You go to Toronto and you kiss your career goodbye.

I've been thinking that all week. Was the decision to ask Marner to list least hardest working teammates and then tell them dumb, yes it was. But he didn't abuse anyone or take their money.

I'm so glad we didn't end up dealing Chychrun to LAK. Blake wasnt budging. CBJ almost paid what LAK would have sent us for Chychrun for Provorov. They essentially traded Gavrikov and a 2nd for Provorov, which is great asset management. And Provorov will probably be their 3rd or 4th best defender in a couple seasons which feels crazy.

But man did PHI get hosed by the Kings. Gave LAK a get out of jail free card. Borderline pisses me off.

Sens rumored to be shopping DeBrincat.

I really want to avoid what the Sens have done these two seasons. That DeBrincat trade is going to look real bad if they don't get a good return for him or get him signed. Then they double downed on Chychrun. I thought at the time getting Cat for so cheap was a perfect way to move out of the build but it doesn't seem like they did their homework on if he would stay. I hope they haven't tried to pull out of the rebuild a year too early because I love what they have done and really enjoy a good chunk of that roster.

Patience is key in a true rebuild. If you are going to make a big splash and move a top ten pick for a piece to help you move out of one, you better not trade for an someone who is an upcoming UFA

Calgary replacing their GM with the AGM and HC with the AHC. I mean what is even the point?

Mass exodus???
I think Hellebuyck and Dubois are easily the two most important players for the Jets. Both are entering the last year before UFA. Both are leaving.

Cheveldayoff doesn't want to rebuild. We'll see if he does the right thing and trade them for futures or if he does the Treliving and hope that adding some rich, old farts to the roster will fix the problem.

They have a serious locker room problem.

Seems to have started back when Dustin Byfuglien bailed on them and it's been progressively worse since.
Paul Maurice let the locker room leaders run the show. That would be Wheeler and Scheifele. They held too much power and handled it poorly.

Byfuglien was a buffer between them and the rest of the team. When he got sick of that dynamic he retired. Things have degraded since then. Stripping Wheeler of the captaincy and bringing in a new coach didn't work. He needed to be traded but his contract made that difficult.

It's all fallen apart and management is hoping things can be taped back together.

I have no idea what the problem is in Winnipeg, but I doubt very much Byfuglien's retiring had much to do with the culture or Wheeler and Scheifele. Time for a new GM though.

These situations and stories are so interesting to me. So are Wheeler a d Scheifele just pricks to everyone? Or do they try to make speeches between periods and after games and it doesn't go over well? What I'd do to be a fly in the room (preferably one without the sense of smell)

The penguins gave Dubas a 7 year deal paying him almost 6 million a year.

What the puck?

Sounds like that Ottawa group is a rather large group. Wonder if we ever find out who owns how much?
