A bit of both. I always wanted to see what PMo could do with a good team. We saw that in 2018 and now in 2024. He's an average coach, but a good talker. He could have won in 2018, but Vegas and MAF decided to be f***ing irritating. The Jets were the better team in that series. Maurice fired himself because he saw that he couldn't fix stupid anymore. The Jets' adherence to loyalty will always be their downfall. They need to have a more mercenary approach to it. They can't worry about paying KC in 3 years. He won't be anywhere near worth what they will pay him.
I'm not sure they can enjoy the luxury of being Vegas-like with a mercenary approach but they certainly do need to evolve away from the the absolute loyalty.
I am guessing that throughout the league players are aware that TNSE is a top-notch organization to play for that takes really good care of their players and families. I don't recall too many players criticizing the organization for that.
It's location and always will be. So you do have to counter that but I'm of the belief they already are doing all they can to counter it by being the excellent organization.
What they do not need to do is make foolish signings for long term because the player is "family" or however it may be viewed. If it makes sense and the performance will warrant it then sign that retirement deal. Playoffs notwithstanding I think the Hellebuyck signing was a good one (sorry Sip). Scheifele felt more like they were trapped into it due to a lack of center depth. But I think the Scheifele deal will be good for most of the contract and what else could they have done?
I also think they need to go back to being extremely cautious with their draft capital. I'll confess to liking the deal to get a 2C in Monahan in return for a 1st (hindsight says otherwise) but my usual opinion on that is to suggest to never trade a 1st, simply because of the "Winnipeg Tax" and it being so hard to get UFAs to sign here. Maybe the end benefit of this first is Monahan signs a reasonable deal to play 2C here and we plug that hole for a while and that's good. But giving up those firsts should be the hardest decision Chevy makes.
I'm guessing that's exactly what you meant by mercenary approach.
