So, I noticed something weird with regards to the goaltending this season. Hellebuyck will, barring a complete collapse in the last few games, win the Vezina this season. But he's for all intents and purposes having the same season as last year when he was either the 3rd or 4th best goalie in the league. Basically the same save percentage and save percentage above expected, average save percentage around the league is the same.

Hellebuyck is having a fine season, no doubt. But why isn't any other goalie in the league having a better season?

That is the thing about him, he's very consistent. It seems Noone else comes close to matching that sans pre surgery Vas.

Nobody seems to want those final 2 spots in the east lol. It might only take 90-93 points to get each lol.
It should be pretty interesting..2 teams on winning streaks 2 teams losing streaks

I looked back a few years, and it's not actually that weird. It was just that last year was absurd. Hellebuyck arguably had a Vezina worthy season last year too. Saros, Sorokin and Ullmark were just having career years the same season, somehow.
it's b/c helle is on another level of consistency. he may be the only goalie you can rely on every season to be considered in the elite tier (lets say top-5). otherwise it is basically a rotation of "random" goalies, with a few repeat players having seasons to that respect.

for example using money-puck's goalies Goals Saved Above Expected (GA vs xGA) as a criteria:

filters: all-strengths, totals, min 41 starts
top-5 last 5 seasons
23-24: helle, demko, swayman, bob, binnington
22-23 saros, ullmark, sorokin, helle, shesterkin
21-22: shesterkin, vas, andersen, bob, kuemper
20-21 (adj to 30): helle, vas, MAF, smith, saros
19-20: helle, rask, blackwood, hart, bernier

so helle has 3 #1 finishes, 4/5 seasons in the top-5. evidently no other goalie has multiple #1 finishes (playing more GP will influence totals, but there's minimal changes to the ranking if you go by rate) & 4 others that have multiple top-5 appearances.

if you go by 5v5, same other filter
23-24: helle, swayman, daccord, binnington, ingram
22-23: saros, sorokin, ullmark, shesterkin, vas
21-22: shesterkin, vas, quick, demko, sorokin
20-21 (adj to 30): saros, helle, vas, MAF, smith
19-20: helle, blackwood, rask, hart, binnington
