I have watched so little hockey this season but just went over the NHL website to noodle a bit and a few things caught my eye.

One of my favorite running stats is goal differential and it paints a good picture of what teams are having a legit good season and who is kind of bobbing for apples.

Despite the Oilers garbage start they are legit now. One of the most intriguing story lines currently is that it looks like there is a strong chance that Edmonton and Vegas might meet in the first round of the playoffs and oh boy is that a beauty. Vancouver is having an insane season and unless they go in a prolonged slump (definitely possible) they will be tough to catch at the top of that division now.

Florida is quietly putting together a nice season again despite some injury challenges.

How does Boston keep doing it? They lost their #1 and #2 centres and are currently sitting on top of the east??

Devils are having a rougher season. Shit goaltending is never good, they lost Hughes for a stretch, Dougie Hamilton is a big loss.

Fight for the last wild card spot is going to be good in both the east and west this year. Last year the east top 8 teams was pretty much a given early.

Do you remember how big a deal Timo Meyer was at last trade deadline. He sucked when he came over in the playoffs and he is having a bad season so far. I wonder what has happened to him?

Feel like a lot of guys who had success in the West cant translate that to the East...

Seattle would go on to win this game in a shootout. Thanks to the hockey gods for getting one right :)

I know it's an inevitability because the job of the players' union is to maximize income for the workers, but man does it leave a sour taste in the mouth when they declare themselves to be totally fine with their members suffering head trauma but not with their members getting suspended for willfully attacking other players' heads.

The PA and the players live to defy the NHL at ALL costs.

Avoiding loss of players cash imposed by league >>>>>>>>>> players safety.

I would suspect that it will one day be used as evidence of the players' own culpability in a lawsuit centered around head trauma, concussions and CTE against the league.

"Look, we tried to minimize head trauma, but every time we handed out lengthy suspensions the players union made it clear that they were staunchly against it."

It is the only union that I am aware of that cares nothing about its members safety, including the risk of lifelong permanent injury for doing your job.

The NHLPA and the NHL have always looked at hockey players and injuries with the "Next Man Up" approach...

But IMO, this work environment happens for one reason only... the players accept it. They accept their working conditions ( IE: As a player I join the league knowing full well there is some idiot out there that would end my career in a heartbeat if it means his team wins ). They accept this and if they don't like it, they are the only ones who can change it. And by the looks of things, they seem to be happy with the way things are.

Agreed. Change needs to come from the players. At this point, maximizing paychecks has superseded the heath and wellbeing of its members.
