Kyle Dubas signed some head scratching contracts. I remember thinking at the time that one of the older GMs needed to take him aside and explain to him how RFA status without arbitration rights was supposed to work.Absolutely hilarious. If I was more hip with the kids, I’d make a “Leafs and Trying to Not Overpay the Core Four Challenge (IMPOSSIBLE!)” joke. They just love to f*** their salary structure.

How Brad Treliving got another job is beyond me. Calgary is in horrible shape ... and the only reason they're not in worse shape is because nobody wants to sign there.

The problem I had with it was context. Mayers was a fighter in the NHL so he knows how the code worked and still works. The Kaprizov incident was dealt with when Middleton challenged Dillon to a fight and Dillion accepted. They had it out in a good fight and that is that. Also at the start of the following game Lowry accepted Maroon’s challenge to a fight off the opening faceoff too. Not sure if that was still for the Kaprizov hit but none the less the Jets answered the bell twice.
There is only one hockey analyst/personality who thought the Hartman intentional stick to the face wasn’t a cheap shot and egregious. Further evidence is that is Hartman’s 7th fine for goofy shit. He is clearly a douche bag doing douche bag things.
Do your f***ing homework Jamal and be prepared with all the information about the incident.

Tavares has this season and next and they clear $11 million in cap space but Marner will get a raise to about $13 million in two years too so they are still going to be really top heavy with their top 3 forwards. Then there is the issue that this group that is paid very high has still not managed to take the Leafs on a playoff run? In fairness that was true about Ovi too and he did manage to parle his one and only post season playoff success in his long career into a cup. Maybe the Leafs are following that model.
Its a long season maybe the Leafs will continue to underachieve until the right time of the year and finally have that playoff run that Mathews, Marner, and Tavares are getting paid for.

Yeah Mayers was totally out to lunch and he got ripped in that interaction.
I'm not a fan of Kevin Bieksa but he played a tough style in 'the code' and he went on a diatribe about Hartman, comparing him to Raffi Torres who ended up with 2 huge suspensions for his dangerous play.
The disciplinary system is supposed to remove this type of play, either through meaningful deterrents for repeat offenders or by removing the player through escalating suspensions but right now it's too slow to act on players who that dangerous plays are intentional and habitual.
I do think the PA has a big hand in this too, it's time for the leadership of the players to call for better player safety.

At the end of the day Hartman was delivered a huge message by Jeannot that his view of the code is not acceptable. I'm sure Hartman will be run by every tough guy in the league now to send a message to stay away from finesse players

They didn't need to sign Tavares and once Nylander signs over 50 % of the cap will be tied up with 5 players and they still haven't fixed their goalie situation.

I have yet to see Mayers talk about that play or how it happened in the literal first shift that Hartman played in his literal next game.
Part of me hopes the wild will still be on the playoff periphery the next time we play, so that they’ll at least spend some time in the game trying to play hockey instead of “Axe, Axe, Who’s Got The Axe?” with our player’s dental work.
Hartman is a loser, plain and simple.
