MacKinnon re-signed. 12.6M x 8YRs.

Finally overpaid after being underpaid his whole career
I don't get the underpaid thing.

Players sometimes are offered life long financial security coming off ELCs. Karlsson and Turris took it. They outperformed. But I don't get the mentality that they're owed something

White didn't live up to his deal. Does he owe us?

I think that's a fair deal considering his status in the game and age. Cap inflation will only help

Most people will agree with you. Make this retroactive to Alfredsson and 99% will disagree with you. Kinda funny, no?

Tbh with a rising cap I'd say it's a fair deal for a top 5 player in the league.

I don't think MacKinnon is going to age gracefully.

His offense comes entirely from his dynamic tools and skillset, which I think is legitimately the best in the league.

Once he loses a step he won't be nearly as effective because he's just not a smart hockey player.

I know it sounds crazy to say that about a player who's been a 100P guy the last 5 years, but I've never seen a player kill more plays due to poor IQ.

He gets away with it now because he creates so much out of nothing but once the elite speed goes the contract will be an anchor.

He just turned 27 like 2 weeks ago. How quickly do you think his physical capabilities are going to deteriorate?

To be fair, I think a lot of this could have been said about Ovechkin when he was younger and he adapted. MacKinnon seems like someone that would be even more meticulous and dedicated to his craft, so I think it's very possible he'd find a way to adapt.

This lacks context. Alfredsson's final deal with Ottawa came with a year tagged on at the end that neither team nor player expected him to play, but helped drive down the AAV. When he did play it and expressed interest at the time in returning, the team agreed to a value that made him whole for that final year. The team reneged on a deal and that's where the disagreement stems from.

Comparatively, was MacKinnon owed anything by Colorado? No, of course not. But good on him for cashing in and good on the organization for understanding the value he brings.

Didn't that come with a direct claim from Alfredsson that promises were made about compensating on a future deal and not kept though? Maybe I'm misremembering.
No, you remember it fine. Alfredsson claimed he was promised that they would make it up to him for playing the year at 1 mil that neither team or player expected him to still be playing for.

Alfredsson said:
"When I did my last contract, ending in the 2012 season, I was asked to help the team manage the salary cap by adding on an extra year to my contract," he said. "I agreed. Each side fully expected I would retire and not play the 2012-13 season."

"In late June this year, I decided I had it in me to play one more season," he said. "I told management I was prepared to return, and reminded them of our [handshake] agreement [to make up for my 2012-13 salary] from the year before. To my disappointment, negotiations quickly stalled, and only a few days later other teams contacted me, including Detroit."

The team however disputed that interpretation of events.

Thanks, I thought so. Certainly blurs the lines too much to be comparable, regardless of which sides interpretation you take.

If you have elite speed and lose it, you can reinvent yourself

If you have average speed or below average speed and lose it, you can't play at all.

There's a big difference there
