It's rampant. Logan Mallieux. Also going further back, look no further to how long the Theo Fleury/Graham James stuff was covered up. Junior hockey culture in Canada is absolutely toxic. The way that guys like Aliu were treated too in regards to racism is reprehensible.

They should throw the book at those involved, IMO. The funding for the programs should absolutely be cut off.

This. Hockey Canada has been living in its own world for years. They've been put up on such a pedestal for so long they think their s*** doesn't stink. All they care about is on ice results; they are an arrogant organization who have enabled players. It's no surprise Hockey Canada views itself as an old boys club with stuff like this and how visible minorities and people with different lifestyles have been treated over the years. The hockey media in Canada has glorified HC and the players. It took independent investigative sports journalists to expose this case; the hockey media didn't touch it until Katie Strang, Rick Westhead, Dan Robson, etc. wrote about it. Hockey Canada are finally getting their comeuppance, it's been long overdue. You can make a case that Hockey Canada should be disbanded and a new organization formed.

I feel for the victim in this episode; what happened to her was despicable. I hope she's doing well and is able to move forward. She's stated she will participate in the re-opened investigation.

cannot help but look at vancouver right now and just wonder what they are doing. they were all talk about making changes and opening up cap space and players they were linked to continue to be moved and the canucks are stuck just sitting there with essentially the same team they had last year. have to wonder when things start moving for an org that wanted to shake up the locker room

Huberdeau UFA after this season. If CAL doesn't resign him, they can flip him for like two 1sts +

Can't imagine a Rangers equivalent to that package. Especially given all of our NTC/NMC (god, I hate having those) contracts.

Team control with Tkachuk being locked up 8 years versus Huby going toward UFA is a factor, but I can’t imagine they were going to have a hard time signing Huberdeau if they kept him. Massive package to give up.

I had read that it does free up over 10 million in cap space for them next season with the trade/moves ...so maybe the plan was to give up on this season and bide their time and resign Huberdeau next season as a UFA ?

Hubs for Tkachuk seems like a rather lateral move, no?

I don't think either team got better speaking from a playoff perspective.

I guess Tkachuk is 5 years younger and locked up for 8 years now while Huberdeau is a UFA next summer and will be 30, so they’d be looking at giving 7-8 years to a 30 year old. Tkachuk is also grittier which I guess they felt they needed? My reaction was the same as yours - Huberdeau just put up 115 points so how are they adding so much, but I guess with age and team control it makes more sense. I think Calgary ends up not getting either signed so it’ll be interesting.

I think Tkachuk is a clear upgrade on huberdeau.

I’m a bit perplexed that they threw weegar into the trade. UFA to be I know, but he did so many good things for that team that are going to be near impossible for them to replace. They aren’t exactly filled with assets to trade for a defenseman which was a clear weakness before they traded Weegar.

I read that Huberdeau waived his NMC. We should stop speaking like that never happens. Often guys do not want to be where they are not wanted. If a trade comes our way for one of our NMC guys it does not mean it can not happen. We traded Gabs who I think had a no trade clause at that time.

NMCs are more so the player has control over his destination (totally reasonable btw) than to lock them into the team.

Only a big deal on the internet.
BS. They absolutely lock a player into a team. Does it prevent a trade? No, because usually when a trade is looming the player also realizes it's in his best interests to get a fresh start.

But let's not kid ourselves, it absolutely makes the contract unmovable, and if the player is in a good spot why would he waive his clause?

Florida has basically emptied the tank on assets. No first until 25 or 26. One playoff series win behind them. Weather was a huge piece of their defense, so wtf are they going to replace him with?

Calgary got really interesting with that return. Wouldn't surprise me if they were even better next year than last year. Huberdeau is as good a replacement for gaudreau as you can find and what they lose in tkchuck they gain in a formidable blue line. Under Sutter having depth, a couple stars up front and a great defense matters a ton. They lost that Edmonton series because the backend got exposed. I hope for that franchise and their fans that they can lock those two players up. Theyve been through a lot and deserve a break imho

Some will. Some will not. Some for family reasons or other reasons choose to stay. Others do not want to stay on a team that does not want them. It is a individual call.
