Sabres locking up Power for 7 years. My lord.. Ottawa and Buffalo are locking up their core long term right off the bat. Either works out great or some guys are on bad deals. It's not possible every single guy hits their potential or doesn't regress... right... right?

It’ll be interesting to see how Yzerman builds out this core. Larkin and DeBrincat are the only real insight on those signings right now. Seider’s will be very telling.

Unless Yzerman is stubborn beyond his own good, I don't see a way to sign Mo for anything less than a matching deal that Larkin got. Mo could push it if he wants, but if Steve sells it as you two are my guys take matching deals Mo may bite.

I think that they were a little hasty with Samuelsson and Cozens- but even so, I fear that Buffalo team going forward. There's a lot of young talent on that team and as they hit their primes, it will be scary.

Ottawa's contracts all seem solid. They've bet on the right horses at 8 mil hits that seem really reasonable. I'm not quite as afraid of them overall though

Man Kirby Dach looks good for Montreal… this team would be more interesting with him as our 2C.

realistically that probably would have meant trading the Kasper pick for him since Montreal traded the 13th overall+a 3rd that draft for him

I don't think many would have been on board with trading a top 10 pick for him especially at the time with his damaged reputation from the injuries

I don't think I would have been on board for that even and I was a huge fan of his his draft year

What the heck with the Power contract? 8+ already in cap hit! Not every contract is going to just work out, and now they have 2 defenders locked up at over 19 mil and one of them has all of 1 season under his belt. Not saying it can't become a good deal, but any number of things can go wrong from injuries to just him not developing into a 8 mil defender and many more things, such a stupid risk so quickly. It is like they said, "well look how good Tage's deal has done for us, let's do this for anyone who looks good early".

My guess is Seider will want and get 10 now if a 1 year pro who didn't even play as good as him wants and gets 8.3 already.

That's not how it works.

Yzerman isn't going to lose the plot just because Buffalo did with Owen Power. And he's not going to hand out an EK53 contract to Seider just because Dahlin got one playing zero defense. Better young defensemen are signed to better contracts than Dahlin. Heiskanen, McAvoy, Makar, Fox. So one team f***ing up does not mean all teams are going to follow the same f***up.

Contracts signed during Covid in 2021 do not equal contracts signed in 2023. Its the same reason McDavid isn't the highest paid player in the league anymore.

We or Yzerman don't have to like it but Sanderson and Power set the bar for young D trending towards #1 capable play.

Maybe. They're both promising young defensemen on rebuilding teams. And Seider is better than both of them.

I am on record here stating that Seider should get paid at least what Larkin is paid, if not more. Between 8.5 and 9 mil is totally fine. We shouldn't have any problem paying guys what they're worth.

I just wish we had signed Seider first. it would have been nice to set the bar for other teams (in our own division no less) than letting them set the bar for us.

Nobody puts Yzerman in a corner.

But it's hard to say, does Mo want to sign now or does he think he can get 60-70 points with a full season with Walman? Then ask for closer to Dahlin buckaroos.

Anybody here old enough, or at least FEEL old enough, to the point where we're seeing the name Bedard a lot and you look around at others complaining about it and you just know, "Yeah. Marketing 101"?
