the average ticket buying audience of your average NHL team isn't huge into gaming
and your average gamer isn't huge into following an NHL team day in and day out
It's two different "markets" and two totally different products
The fact that the one product is a representation of the other product leads to people assuming they should be treated as part of the same ecosystem but they're really not
In my opinion
I will put my sexy ass car on the line to say that the people who go to kings games are the fringe hockey fans who go to games on dates. And those who pick up a hockey game are much more likely to be hockey fans.
Shit go even pick up a Fifa game and look at the usernames.
People who play the games are much more interested in the sport than the people who attend the game. Even the updates in game tell you of real life acquisitions in sports.
The people who buy the games are very likely part of the ecosystem but I doubt it the same way vice versa.
